My HP Envy 5535 printer will not connect to my router. I've tried unplugging the printer and plugging it back in. I've tried resetting the router. It identifies the router and I enter the correct password, but it eventually says "connection failed'.

Hi @efostino,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand you're having trouble connecting your HP ENVY 5535 e-All-in-One Printer to your router. Let's go through some steps to troubleshoot and resolve the issue:

1. Restart Devices

  • Restart Printer and Router: Power off the printer and the router. Wait for about 30 seconds, then turn the router back on first. Once the router is fully restarted, turn the printer back on.

2. Check Network Settings

  • Wi-Fi Network Name and Password: Make sure you are entering the correct Wi-Fi network name (SSID) and password. It's also important to ensure there are no typos or extra spaces when entering the password.

3. Printer Network Configuration

  • Restore Network Settings on Printer: Reset the network settings on your printer to default. You can do this from the printer’s control panel:
    • Go to the Setup menu.
    • Select Network, then Restore Network Defaults.
    • Confirm the reset.

4. Re-run Wireless Setup

  • Wireless Setup Wizard: Use the printer’s Wireless Setup Wizard to reconnect to the network:
    • On the printer’s control panel, go to Setup > Network > Wireless Setup Wizard.
    • Follow the on-screen instructions to select your network and enter the password.

5. Check Router Settings

  • Router Settings: Ensure your router’s security settings are compatible with your printer. The printer supports WPA/WPA2 security. If your router uses a different security type (like WPA3 or enterprise encryption), consider changing it temporarily to WPA2 for testing.
  • MAC Address Filtering: Check if MAC address filtering is enabled on your router. If so, you need to add the printer’s MAC address to the allowed devices list.

6. Check for Interference

  • Signal Interference: Make sure your printer is within range of your router and there are no physical obstructions or electronic devices (like microwaves or cordless phones) causing interference.

7. Update Printer Firmware Update the firmware on an HP printer

  • Firmware Update: Make sure your printer’s firmware is up to date. Sometimes connectivity issues can be resolved with a firmware update. You can check for updates on the HP website or through the HP Smart app.

8. Use WPS Connection

  • WPS (Wi-Fi Protected Setup): If your router supports WPS, try connecting the printer using this method:
    • Press the WPS button on your router.
    • On the printer, press and hold the Wireless button for about 3 seconds until the wireless light starts blinking. The printer should connect to the network automatically.

9. Check Printer IP Configuration

  • IP Address Conflict: Ensure that there is no IP address conflict. You can manually assign a static IP address to the printer within the range of your router’s DHCP.

10. Advanced Network Troubleshooting

  • Network Diagnostic Report: Print a network diagnostic report from your printer to check the connection status and any possible error codes:
    • On the printer control panel, go to Setup > Network > Print Network Configuration Page.

Refer to this document: HP ENVY 5535 e-All-in-One Printer User manual

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
