I have a HP Envy 5540 printer that prints on demand from computer or phone but the touchscreen display lights up and will not display anything but a ? or the Home picture on left side. I tried the restart process for everything and that didnt help. Is the display screen toast and is that replaceable?

@James996, Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds like your HP ENVY 5540 All-in-One Printer is functioning for printing tasks via computer or phone, but the touchscreen display is not responding properly, only showing a question mark (?) or the Home icon, without access to scan or copy functions.
Here’s a breakdown of what might be happening and what you can try:
- Firmware Glitch or Corruption – The display firmware may be stuck or corrupted.
- Hardware Failure – The touchscreen itself may be failing or has a loose internal connection.
- Power Supply Issue – Inconsistent power can cause display malfunctions.
Troubleshooting Steps
Power Reset
- Turn off the printer.
- Unplug the power cord from both the printer and the wall outlet.
- Wait at least 60 seconds.
- Plug it back in directly to a wall outlet (not a surge protector).
- Turn the printer back on.
Firmware Update (if accessible)
If you can access the printer from your computer:
- Go to HP Software and Driver Downloads.
- Search for your model: HP ENVY 5540.
- Download and install the latest firmware update.
Check for Display Response
- Tap around the screen to see if any part is responsive.
- If it remains stuck on the same icons, it’s likely a hardware issue.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
