HP Smart Tank 5101 All-in-One Printer

My 5101 has been a problem ever since I installed it.
The current issue is that it is periodically printing this weird color bar - sometimes a whole page, sometimes in the middle of a printed page. Has done this since new.  I have NO idea what to do with this. So far this printer would be a better boat anchor.   I miss my 7155IMG_0802.jpeg

Hi @JH7155,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds frustrating dealing with ongoing issues with your HP Smart Tank 5101. Here are some steps you can try to resolve the color bar problem.

Check Ink Levels and Cartridges:

  • Make sure the ink levels are adequate and that the cartridges are properly installed. Sometimes improper installation or low ink levels can cause printing issues.

Run Printer Diagnostics:

  • Use the printer’s built-in diagnostic tools to check for any errors or issues. You can usually access this through the printer’s control panel or the HP Smart app.

Update Printer Firmware:

  • Ensure your printer’s firmware is up to date. Outdated firmware can sometimes cause printing problems. You can update it via the HP Smart app or the HP website.

Clean Printheads:

  • Use the printer’s maintenance options to clean the printheads. Sometimes residue or clogging can cause strange printing issues.

Check Print Settings:

  • Make sure your print settings are configured correctly. Sometimes incorrect settings can cause unexpected results.

Perform a Factory Reset:

  • As a last resort, consider performing a factory reset on the printer. This will restore the printer to its default settings and may resolve any underlying issues.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Thank you Alden4.
This has happened since new - brand new ink tanks, full and installed correctly. This issue doesn't happen all the time - just frustrating when it does. Sometimes it is the full page, sometimes just a few lines. I will try the other recommendations.
