Common problems HP Solution Center not working : Adobe Flash Player Error and Unable to scan
We would like to share some of the most frequently asked questions about HP Solution Center not working : Adobe Flash Player Error and Unable to Scan.
HP Recommended
macOS 12.0 Monterey

My 2 laptops are connected to my HP printer via my home wifi network. It works fine for printing from either laptop, so there is obviously a good connection between the laptops and the printer.

However when I try to scan a document placed on the HP screen to either laptop, the HP Smart App tells me no printer is detected.

I have run the Diagnose & Fix function, which says that the connection is fine and prints the test page.

Hi @Bob-G46,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

Thanks for sharing those details. It sounds like your HP OfficeJet Pro 7720 can print perfectly fine over Wi-Fi from both MacOS laptops, but scanning fails with the message “No printer detected” in the HP Smart app. Since printing works, we know the network is fine — this points to a software or permissions issue on MacOS, especially with scanning.

Here are the steps you can take to fix the scanning issue on Macos Monterey (12.0):

1. Check HP Smart App Permissions

HP Smart needs full access to your Mac's resources to scan:

  • Go to System Preferences > Security & Privacy > Privacy tab.
  • Click the lock to make changes.
  • Under Files and Folders and Full Disk Access, make sure HP Smart is checked.
  • Also, check Camera and Accessibility if available.

2. Use Image Capture (Built-in MacOS app)

Sometimes the HP Smart app fails, but MacOS's native tools still work:

  • Open Image Capture (found in Applications).
  • Your HP printer should appear in the sidebar.
  • Place a document in the scanner and try to scan.

3. Re-add the Printer with Scanner Support

  • Go to System Preferences > Printers & Scanners.
  • Click the printer, then click the minus (-) to remove it.
  • Click the plus (+) to re-add it.
    • Make sure to select the printer that says “HP OfficeJet Pro 7720 (Bonjour)” and includes “Scan” under “Use” or “Kind.”

4. Reset the HP Smart App

  • Close the app.
  • Delete it from Applications.
  • Re-download the latest version of HP Smart from the Mac App Store.
  • Reopen it and sign in again.

5. Check for Software Updates

  • Click the Apple menu > About This Mac > Software Update to install any macOS or HP driver updates.

6. Try Scanning from the Printer’s Control Panel

  • On the printer’s touchscreen, select Scan > Computer.
  • If it doesn't show your Mac, you may need to enable scanning on the computer in the HP Utility app (found in Applications > HP).

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Hi Vikram,

Thanks for the detailed advice. I have tried all 6 of your suggestions, but none has had any positive effect. My laptops and the printer just will not 'see' each other for scanning, although I can print from both.

The only difference from your summary of my situation is that my OS version is Sequoia 15.4.1, Not Monterey. I had to select Monterey on the HP Support enquiry as no later versions of OS were listed.

Do you have any other suggestions?
