What can I do if the document has been removed and the "original loaded" message remains? That is my situation and now the printer will not copy or scan from the document feeder....even though there are no documents loaded.

@TheHolyMoly, Welcome to HP Support Community,
Thank you for posting your query; I’m here to help by guiding you through steps to resolve this issue
Restart the Printer
- Turn off the printer.
- Unplug the power cord from the back of the printer.
- Press and hold the power button for 30 seconds.
- Wait for 60 seconds and connect the power cord back in.
- Turn on the printer.
Check and Clean the Feeder Sensors
Use a soft, lint-free cloth (or a cotton swab) to gently wipe down the sensors. If you notice any debris, dust, or paper bits, that might be triggering the error. Don’t forget to clean the rollers while you’re at it.
Inspect for Paper Jams or Debris
Sometimes, even a small scrap of paper or dust in the feeder can make the printer think there’s an original loaded when there isn't. Check the entire document path, including the area where the paper feeds in and out, for any stuck paper or debris.
Gently run a soft cloth along the path to ensure there’s no hidden obstruction.
Open and Close the Feeder Tray
Sometimes, just opening and closing the document feeder tray will "reset" the sensors and clear the error. Try this a couple of times, and see if the message disappears.
Run HP Print and Scan Doctor (Windows only):
- Download and run the HP Print and Scan Doctor tool. Follow the prompts to diagnose and fix common printing issues.
Update Printer Firmware (Update the firmware on an HP printer | HP® Support)
- Go to the HP Customer Support - Software and Driver Downloads page. Enter your printer model number and search for the latest firmware update. Follow the instructions to download and install the firmware update.
Reset the Printer Settings (Factory Reset)
If all else fails, you may want to reset the printer to its factory settings. This can help clear any stubborn errors.
You may refer this guide: Restore factory defaults on your HP printer | HP® Support
I hope this helps.

Thank you for the reply. That was all too much for me. I'm not an HP inkjet printer expert. Copying and scanning won't work. I tried the power drain, but that was as far as I could follow the detailed instructions that day. I had spent too much time with problem solving already...so I went looking for another printer. My HP printer has been reliable until now. When copying and scanning is absolutely necessary for me, I'll decide whether it's a new printer or spending more hours problem solving this one.

Also, I did do the factory reset, but the problem continued. All it did was make me have to add my network info and preferences all over again. I actually did check the paper path and open/close the feeder tray....so I did try a bit more than the power drain. I got frustrated and stopped, but thank you for trying to help.
