Hi All. I have just purchased a new printer and have connected the printer to my phone line with the cable that came with the printer in order to use fax. But however i have noticed that when i connect my printer to the phone line,  the volume decreases. As soon i disconnect my printer from the phone line the volume is back to normal.  I used to have a HP 7310 All in one printer with fax i had no problems. I had to buy a new printer due to compatibility issues with new PC. But i have now noticed that the volume on my Phone line decreases when i plug phone cord into line on printer.  Also when i do a Fax test the report says Fax unsuccsessful due to wrong phone cord or something plugged into Ext-2 but nothing is plugged into Ext-2, and I am using the Phone cord that came with the printer. It passes Fax hardware test, and passes Fax connected to active telephone wall jack and also passes Phone cord connected to correct port on fax.

Fails using correct type of phone cord with fax, even though i use the cord that came with printer.

I have also noticed that if i try and make a phone call, i get a error wrong number dial tone sayimg this number is not recognised please dial again. Even though i have made sure i dialed the correct number. Then if i disconnect the phone cord wire and i dial the same number the call goes through.  I am thinking if i need some kind of filter on my phone line, as i use the same line for phone calls and faxes. I did not need a filter on my old printer.

Any solutions would be much appreciated.

Just to let anyone else know if they encounter the same problem as me, as I have fixed my problem.  Install a DSL microfilter and plug in your printer/fax into it, problem solved.
