Hi @TrishMEHS,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

I'd be glad to help you!

If your HP DeskJet 4158e is set up as "scan only," it may be due to incorrect settings or incomplete installation. Here's how to resolve this issue and set up your printer for both printing and scanning:

1. Check Printer Status

  1. Restart Printer: Turn off your printer, wait for 10 seconds, and then turn it back on.
  2. Check Connections: Ensure that your printer is properly connected to your computer via USB or connected to your Wi-Fi network.

2. Reinstall the Printer Software

Sometimes, the printer may only show up as a scanner if the full software suite was not installed correctly.

  1. Uninstall Existing Drivers:
    • Go to Control Panel > Devices and Printers.
    • Right-click on your HP DeskJet 4158e and select Remove Device.
  2. Download and Install Full-Feature Software:
    • Visit the HP Support website and search for your printer model.
    • Download the full-feature software for your printer that includes both printing and scanning functionalities.
    • Install the software, following the prompts to connect your printer correctly.

3. Set Printer as Default

Ensure that your printer is set as the default printer:

  1. Go to Control Panel > Devices and Printers.
  2. Right-click on your HP DeskJet 4158e and select Set as Default Printer.

Please find the remaining steps in the next post.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance

Hi @TrishMEHS,

Please find the remaining steps below.

4. Use HP Smart App

  1. Open HP Smart:
    • If you haven't already, download the HP Smart app from the Microsoft Store or your device's app store.
  2. Add Printer:
    • Open HP Smart and select Add Printer if your printer is not already listed.
  3. Enable Print and Scan Features:
    • HP Smart should automatically configure the printer for both printing and scanning.
    • If it still shows as "scan only," use the Print & Scan settings within the app to troubleshoot.

5. Check Printer Settings

  1. Printer Properties:
    • Go to Control Panel > Devices and Printers.
    • Right-click on your printer and select Printer Properties.
    • Ensure the General tab does not have any settings that restrict the printer to scanning only.

6. Run the HP Print and Scan Doctor

  1. Download and run the HP Print and Scan Doctor.
  2. Follow the instructions to diagnose and fix any setup issues with your printer.

Following these steps should help you change your HP DeskJet 4158e from "scan only" mode to full print and scan functionality.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance
