Can I set up my Office Jet 8020e print to NOT print a fax when it is received but instead save it to a file on my desktop.  If so, how do I do that?  Thanks

Hi Dragon Fur

I did speak to the HP support desk, and they told me that the 8020 doesn't allow you to save faxes to a file.  Instead, you have to print the fax and then scan and then save it.  This is not the case for other printers that do allow you to save a fax directly to a file.  I couldn't find any way in the HPSmart settings that allows you to save a fax directly.  I also tried the EWS method but again it didn't offer any settings that allows you to save directly to a file.  Again, I am talking about the Office Jet 8020e.

If you think the HP support person was wrong, can you please send me step by step directions on how to accomplish saving faxes to a file instead of printing them.  Thanks

I suspect I am wrong.

?

HP Smart is not meant to set up, use, access, or manage printer Fax - not sending and not receiving faxes.

Fax using the printer generally, though not always, assumes you have a paper copy to start.

Yes, if you received a fax and only have a paper copy of the received fax, you'd have to scan and save.

Makes sense.

The user manual is written for the model series - OfficeJet Pro 8020e.

There is no user manual for an individual model within the series.

You say the option is not available as described on Page 83 of that document.

HP Support says this printer model does not support Digital Fax as described in the manual.

Another source - for this model -

Fax Smart Software FeaturesDigital Fax - Fax to PC is available with Windows

For others reading -- Refer to the manual -

Destination folder on the PC must be Shared, always available, and the Fax must be Black / White.

Based on the "Digital Fax" wording for switching off Digital Fax (Page 83 of the user manual), I would have guessed the Digital Fax setup would be available in EWS as well as on the Printer Control Panel.

It seemed to me that the EWS option would be there, but there we are.

Seems that I'm wrong, after all.

?

Rats.

Apologies.

Hi Dragon Fur

when you say, you are wrong, do you mean that the 8020 does not allow you to send faxes directly to a file even though the manual seem to indicate that it does.  Thanks

You asked if Support is wrong -

I don't know.

I don't have access to the printer model, only the documentation.

I might be "wrong" in the way I am interpreting the information.

If you do not have the options as described in the printer user manual, then my conclusion is that they are not there.

EWS only enters into the equation if the settings -- whatever they are -- are available in EWS.

What?

Some printers can be set up to do certain tasks -- for example, those described in the manual -- but the settings are not available in EWS.

For Example,

Scan to Email comes in two flavors:  SMTP Scan to Email and the ability to set up Profiles and remote access

OR

A Scan to Email "apps" version that is a stripped down "Not-SMTP" version of the feature.

In both cases, the user manual would describe which (if any) of the features are available and how they work (and are set up).

In my opinion, the answer is that if you don't see a feature / option,

And / Or

That feature / option does not work as described in the user manual,

then

Your printer does not have the option.

Perhaps someone actually familiar with the particular model can explain what the printer can / will do.

I'm out of ideas.
