Common problems HP Solution Center not working : Adobe Flash Player Error and Unable to scan
We would like to share some of the most frequently asked questions about HP Solution Center not working : Adobe Flash Player Error and Unable to Scan.
HP Recommended

Hello,

I scanned a rather lengthy document and compressed it (medium), using my HP1080. The file was saved on my desktop as a .pdf. The file is damaged and can't be opened. Am I able to access the scanned document to re-save without compression (that may have caused the issue)? On my old Cannon, the app allowed me to access previously scanned items prior to them being saved.

Hi @Dan1314,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding your printer!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

Try these steps:

If your scanned document was saved as a compressed PDF and is now damaged, there are limited options to access it again from the scanner itself, as HP scanners typically do not store previous scans internally once they are saved to a computer. However, you can try the following steps to troubleshoot and potentially recover your scan:

Check Temporary Files:

  • Sometimes scanning software stores temporary files on your computer during the scanning process. Check your computer's temporary files directory or the scanning application's directory for any residual files.

Use HP Scan Utility:

  • Open the HP Scan application and check if it offers any access to recently scanned documents or temporary storage options.

Rescan the Document:

  • If you still have the original document, consider rescanning it. Ensure that the settings for compression are adjusted or disabled to prevent any potential file corruption.

Check for Auto-save Features:

  • Some HP scanning applications might have an auto-save or scan history feature. Review the application settings or help documentation for guidance.

Recovery Tools:

  • Consider using PDF recovery software or tools to attempt fixing the damaged file. Several third-party applications offer PDF repair functionalities.

I hope this helps.

Hi @Dan1314,

Thank you for getting back to us, and I’m really sorry to hear the file couldn't be restored.

Since HP scanners like the HP1080 do not store scanned documents internally after saving, unfortunately, it’s not possible to retrieve the original uncompressed scan from the printer once the PDF is damaged. However, here’s a list of steps you can take to minimize the risk going forward and make rescanning easier:

Check for Temporary Files (One Last Try)

Before rescanning, check for any remnants:

On Windows:
Open File Explorer and type %temp% in the address bar. Look for files or folders related to HP or your scan date.

On Mac:
Open Finder → Go to Folder → type ~/Library/Application Support/HP/ or ~/Library/Caches.

Rescan the Original Document

If the original physical document is available:

Open HP Scan or HP Smart app.

Select PDF (not compressed) or choose Best Quality under Scan Settings.

Ensure you don’t enable compression or select minimum compression.

Save the file to a different location (like a new folder on the desktop).

Enable Auto-Save or Scan History (if available)

In the HP Smart app:

Click Settings > Scan Settings.

Look for options like “Auto-Save Scanned Files” or “Scan History” and toggle them ON.

Save in Different Formats

To avoid corruption in the future:

Try scanning as a .JPEG or .TIFF first, then convert it to PDF using a PDF creator tool.

These formats are more fault-tolerant if something interrupts the scan.

I hope this helps.
