Hi @Emma402,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
To resolve the issue with the scanner passcode on your HP OfficeJet Pro 8740 All-in-One Printer, follow these steps to either retrieve or reset the passcode.
Retrieve the Existing Passcode
If you're connected to the printer via the HP Smart app or the embedded web server (EWS), you may be able to retrieve or reset the passcode from there.
Access the Embedded Web Server (EWS):
- Make sure your printer is connected to the same network as your computer or device.
- Find the printer's IP address:
- On the printer's control panel, tap the WiFi icon or go to Settings > Network Information to view the IP address.
- Open a web browser on your computer or mobile device and type the printer's IP address into the address bar.
- This will take you to the EWS page.
Login to the EWS:
- If prompted for a username and password, the default credentials are typically admin for both fields (unless you have changed them).
Check for Scan Settings:
- Once logged in, look for Scan or Security settings.
- You may find an option related to the passcode or PIN for scanning.
Reset the Printer (Factory Reset)
If you can't retrieve the passcode and wish to reset it, you can perform a factory reset on the printer. However, be aware that this will reset all settings to default, including network and scan settings.
- On the printer’s control panel, go to Setup > Printer Maintenance > Restore > Restore Factory Defaults.
- Confirm the reset when prompted.
- After the reset, you will need to set up the printer again, including configuring the scanning options.
Once you've reset the device, you can configure a new passcode or leave it disabled if preferred.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
