I have an HP Envy 7645 All-In-One printer connected to an Apple iMac computer running MacOS 11.6.8. The print function works fine. The scan function does not. When attempting to scan, either with the HP Smart app or with the Printers & Scanners pane in System Preferences, I almost always get the message that the printer was unable to establish a connection to the computer. This happens whether I am connected via Wi-Fi or Ethernet. What are some possible causes and solutions to this problem?
I suspect the problem might be caused by an error introduce during the initial loading of the printer s/w. I cannot reload the s/w, however, because it already has been loaded. How do I remove the present printer s/w so that I can reload the s/w afresh?
This scanner problem have vexed my for a long time. Please. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi @FABEND,
Welcome to the HP Support Community
I understand you are facing a scan-related issue with your HP ENVY 7645 E-All-In-One Printer. Not to worry I will help you to get a resolution to resolve the issue.
To assist better:
- When was the last time you were able to scan fine from your PC?
- Was there any update done on the PC or printer recently?
While you respond to that, Let's go ahead and uninstall the software and reinstall it.
Step 1:Uninstalling HP Printer Software
- Disconnect the USB cable from the printer, if necessary.
- Click Finder
- In the menu bar, click Go, click Applications, and then open the HP or Hewlett Packard folder.
- If HP Uninstaller is in the folder, double click it to uninstall the software, and then skip to the step to prepare the printer for the driver installation.
- If HP Uninstaller is not in the folder, continue to the next step.
- Click and drag the HP or Hewlett Packard folder to the Trash icon in the Dock.
- In the menu bar, click Go, click Go to Folder, type /Library/Printers, and then click Go.
- Click and drag the HP or Hewlett Packard folder to the Trash icon in the Dock.
- Right-click or Ctrl + click the Trash icon, and then select Empty Trash.
- Prepare the printer for the driver installation. Make sure it is turned on, cartridges are installed, and plain paper is loaded in the main tray.
Step 2: Update software on Mac
Step 3: Install the HP Printer Software from this link: Software and drivers for HP ENVY 7645 e-All-in-One Printer
Step 4: Try scanning.
You may also try using HP Easy Scan App.
- Download HP Easy Scan ( Reference Video: Scan from an HP Printer in macOS )
Hope this helps! Keep me posted.
