Note: From May 1, 2024, the HP Scan and Capture app will no longer be available (retired) in the Microsoft Store and HP will not release any further app updates. Alternatively, you can download HP Smart from the Microsoft Store. For more information on how to set up your printer using the HP Smart app, go to HP printer setup (HP Smart app).

Just bought this fabulous printer for the office, but how can I scan from it direct to my PC?  HP Scan from the MS Store cannot find the printer.  I installed the "Full Driver Set" but there is no scanner tool.  Also installed the HP Scan and Capture tool, but it cannot find the printer either.  HP Smart can see the printer, but clicking on the "Scan" tile wants to setup & log into a cloud account.  Is that the only way to scan from the scanner to my PC?  I'd rather not create an account, or make the printer send emails just to move a PDF 15 feet across the office?

The more advanced printers don't have feature scanning directly to a computer or by using hp smart.

You have digital send features that enable you to configure the printer to send documents to email to a shared network folder or to SharePoint.

That is a real shame that the "Enterprise" class of equipment actually takes away basic functionality - especially something as universal as just wanting to scan something without the extra overhead or steps.

Thanks for the info.

Scanning to email or scanning to network folder is way simpler and faster than scanning to PC and using scanning software.

Well - this is a small office without any local file server for a "network folder" (which would be easier).  They are all cloud based.  If they want the image to work with on their computer, now they will have to go though working with the control panel on the printer screen, entering their email address, then getting the email on their PC, and saving the attachment to their computer.

Just opening up HP Scan on their local workstation and clicking the "Scan" button, and then saving it locally is much easier, IMHO.

I think there is an option to save the images to Office 365, I'll have to look into scanning into SharePoint online, that way there is a library that they can access like a directory.  Sigh. 🙂

Simply set up a folder on your desktop and then configure the scan to network folder settings to scan to that folder. This is actually a very useful feature because you can create a one touch shortcut for every workstation in your office to speed up scanning for users.

Yes... I think I am going to have to resort to opening up a globally accessible folder on the one Windows workstation(s) in the office.  I cannot configure scan to SharePoint online or send via email because our O365 logins all require MFA, so embedding an account into the printer doesn't work (it can never verify the account - testing the access always fails).   Not sure what I'll do about the Macs.

It just seems like such a simple option to support.  My old DeskJet 4360 allows me to scan directly to my PC across my home network, I would think a virtually top of the line printer would do the same.   I guess not.  I could run a small SMTP or SMB host server in the closet, I suppose, to support scan to email or a globally shared folder.

Thanks for everybody's help and suggestions.

Check with Microsoft, as there are work arounds for scanning from an MFP, they know that many businesses use scan to email and not all work with MFA. I use an M577 and scan to email using my 365account.

Thanks for the suggestion - I already looked into it.  Upgrading the level of Active Directory service for our small business account level to one where I can implement selective security is an extra monthly charge. I would also want to implement another account (more $$) for this purpose since I wouldn't want to turn off MFA on a real user account.  It just isn't worth it.  I am going to repurpose an old PC (running Linux) to act as a low-end file server in the office for local file sharing, and have the printer write the file to one of it's network shares.

Thanks to everybody for all the suggestions.  It is a shame that for over $2400, it just can't act like a "regular" scanner.
