@ExBrum, Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding HP 6740 scanner to your iMAC

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

Check Connection: Ensure that the scanner is properly connected to your network. Since you can print, this might already be set up correctly, but double-check to ensure no disconnection.

Software Update: Make sure that the scanner's software or driver is up-to-date. You can check HP's official website to download the latest version if needed.

Scan Settings on iMAC:

  • Open the "Image Capture" application on your iMAC, which can be found in the Applications folder.
  • Check that your scanner appears in the Devices or Shared list on the left side. If it doesn't appear, try reconnecting it.
  • If it appears but shows an error, click on your scanner and check the options available to ensure it’s configured correctly.

System Preferences:

  • Go to "System Preferences" > "Printers & Scanners".
  • Select your HP 6740 and ensure that it's added correctly for scanning purposes, not just printing.

Network Settings:

  • Make sure your iMAC and scanner are connected to the same network.
  • If you’re using wireless, try using a wired connection to rule out Wi-Fi issues.

Check Firewall Settings:

  • Sometimes firewall settings can hinder scanning processes. Check to ensure that the security settings on your iMAC are not blocking scanner communication.

Restart Devices: A simple restart of both the scanner and your iMAC can resolve minor communication issues.

Hope this helps!

Take care, and have an amazing day!
