photosmart 5524
Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit)

This is the slowest scanner I have ever owned, it does about 10 per hour, sits there with its red disc spinning round while it thinks what to do, aweful product. I contacted customer support, put in the serial number, it said the warranty expired in 2014, I didn't buy it until 2015 in PC World brand new. I wanted to complain about that but there isn't a contact for complaints. Is there any way I can speed this thing up? I don't want to print or copy, just scan. Using the control panel is the same as using the computer.

Thanks for reaching out to us on HP Support Forums. 🙂 I came across your post and would like to help.

I understand that you have an HP Photosmart 5524 e-All-in-One Printer and it scans very slowly. I read that you have purchased the printer in the year 2015.  Not to worry, I'll do my best to help you.

HP products usually have a one year factory warranty which starts from the day of purchase. However, let us fix you issue first,

I would like to know the following information to assist you better:

  • Is the printer slow while printing documents and while copying also?
  • If the printer copies fast and is slow only while scanning then try to scan using another application and check.
  • Did any hardware changes take place on the printer?

Meanwhile, I did some research and suggest you to perform the following steps:

  • Disconnect the power cable from the printer while the printer is still ON.
  • Disconnect any other cables if connected the printer.
  • Press and hold the printer’s power button for 15 seconds.
  • The printer should be directly connected to the wall outlet and not to a surge protector. Reconnect the power cable to print and the printer should power ON by itself. If the printer doesn’t power ON then please manually power it ON.

Now try to scan a document and observe the scanner bulb which is underneath the glass bed. Once you close the lid, the light will indicate how fast the bulb is moving. If the bulb is slow then you may perform a firmware update on your printer.

I sincerely hope this fixes the issue. Please feel free to let me know how it goes. Cheers! 🙂
