Whenever I want to Scan to my preset Network folder, after confirming the computer name and pressing "Scan" it always takes 2-3 minutes before anything happens. Both the printer and the computer are ethernet connected on the same local network to the same router.  The IP address of both are reserved at the router  to be always the same. Why should it take what seems like forever for the connection to be validated and the scanning to start?  If I scan a sheet and then make a second scan, everything seems to start from scratch each time. I am not the most patient of people and this is driving me nuts.

Thank you for joining HP Forums.

It's a pleasure assisting you in finding answers to your technical queries.

To provide you with an accurate solution, I'll need a few more details:

Is the printing working fine?

Did you try to make any changes in the scan settings?

Let's Run the Print and Scan Doctor

HP provides a free tool called HP Print and Scan Doctor to diagnose and resolve printing problems. Download and run HP Print and Scan Doctor  to quickly and automatically perform several troubleshooting tasks known to resolve this issue. When this link is clicked, HP Print and Scan Doctor are downloaded using your Internet browser's download capabilities.

After the Print and Scan Doctor opens, click Fix Scanning to review a list of issues and fixes.

  1. In the Print and Scan Doctor results screen, view the list of actionable results.

    • If you see white checkmarks, the printer passed the tests.

    • If you see a white wrench, Print and Scan Doctor found an issue and repaired it.

    • If you see yellow exclamation points, the test failed and required user action, but the step was skipped.

    • If you see a red X, follow the on-screen instructions to resolve the issue.

  2. Click Test Scan or Skip.

    • If you click Test Scan, the Print and Scan Doctor launches the HP scanning software to perform a test scan. Follow the on-screen instructions in the scanning software to perform the test.

    • If you click Skip and are not experiencing additional issues, click Quit to exit the tool.

    • If you click Skip and are still experiencing scanning issues, click Support and Troubleshooting for support that is tailored to your scanner, or click HP Support Forum for help from other HP customers.

If the error persists, Click on this link: https://support.hp.com/us-en/product/hp-color-laserjet-pro-m280-m281-multifunction-printer-series/14... and follow the troubleshooting steps, you can skip step 4.

Thank you for your suggestions. Running the Scan Doctor did supposedly fix some issues but I am still having the problem.  It is a "one way" issue only.  If I run HP scan from my PC it connects quickly and scans with no delays.  If, however, I go to the printer/scanner which is in another room, with my documents for scanning and use the control panel which is far more convenient then that is where there is a problem.  I choose "scan to network folder", my PC name is shown instantly and when I press this and then the "scan" control there is an 85 second delay with the screen showing "connecting to <PC name>" before the scanning actually starts.  The WIA service on my PC is on automatic and shows as running.  I have tried everything else I can think of but nothing works.  I haven't tried conecting the printer wirelessly believng that an ethernet connection should be better, am I wrong in this?  I never get an error message, the scan always works but after 85 seconds!  What is happening differently when I start the scan from the printer rather than the PC?

@ChrisJohnW

Appreciate all your time and efforts.

Let's update the firmware for the printer using this link: https://support.hp.com/us-en/product/hp-color-laserjet-pro-m280-m281-multifunction-printer-series/14...

Restart the printer.

Then, assign Manual IP to the printer:

1) Print a Network configuration page from the printer's control panel.

2) Look for IP address from the Network configuration page.

3) Open web browser - Chrome or IE or any other browser that you are using.

4) Type the IP address mentioned on Network configuration page into the browser's address bar or URL bar and press enter button.

5) Go to the Network tab.

6) Click on Networking from the left pane.

7) Then click on Network Address (IP).

😎 Click on Manual IP Address and go to suggest a Manual IP.

9) Scroll down the screen and select Manual DNS server.

10) Enter the Primary and secondary DNS server from the Network Configuration page into the Manual Preferred DNS server field.

11) Click on Apply.

Refer to the video link for step by step instructions - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SCnYyq80V9g

Note: The video is for win 8 but steps are similar for other operating systems as well. You need to enter the IP address in the browser's URL or the address bar to access the printer page.

Thanks for your suggestions.  The Firmware was already up to date.  I carried out the instructions as described with the only exception being that there was no secondary DNS address. Unfortunately that has made absolutely no difference at all. It still takes approximately 85 seconds after pressing "scan" before anything happens.  No error messages, just the delay when operating from the printer control panel.  Yes, I did reboot the router and PC as well as restarting the printer before trying again.  I could not find a way to upload an attachment to this forum other than as a picture so I have included a copy of the network configuration as a jpeg in case you can see anything wreong with this.

Regards,

Chris

I missed the second part of the network report when converting the pdf to jpeg.  Here it is for the sake of completeness.

I recommend you delete the driver at the root level and Install the drivers, follow the steps below:

1.) In Windows, search for and open Programs and features

2.) Select your HP Printer

3.) Select Uninstall

4.) In Windows, search for and open Devices and printers

5.) In the Devices and Printers windows look for your HP printer. If you see it listed right-click on it and choose `Delete' or `Remove Device'

6.) Open up the run command with the "Windows key + R" key combo.

7.) Type printui.exe /s and click Ok. (Note: there is a space in between "printui.exe" and "/s")

8.) Click on the "Drivers" tab

9.) Look for HP Printer driver. If you see it Click on it and click Remove at the bottom

10.) Select Ok

11.) Select Apply and Ok on the Print Server Properties windows

12.) Close Devices and Printers

Then, Click on this link: https://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/selfservice/swdetails/hp-color-laserjet-pro-m280-m281-multifunc...

Now try to scan.

Thanks again for your continued assistance. I carried out the instructions to the letter but the result is still the same sort of delay when scanning from the printer control panel.  70 seconds to connect to the network folder and start scanning.  When run from the PC, 10 seconds to load HP Scan and then it scans immediately.  What seems to be going on?  This is not a showstopper but is a continued annoyance.  I did find some drivers from previous HP scanners which I removed.  I also have two other printers installed (black & white Samsung). One is connected via ethernet and the other wireless.  I can't see how these could interfere in anyway.  They both work fine.

Just as a further point, to check if there was an issue with the Network, I disconnected the ethernet connection and setup the printer to work wirelessly. It worked fine with a USB connection ( I have a very long cable) but that does not allow scanning to a Network folder.  I then set it up  to connect wirelessly (to the same Fritz!box 3490 router).  It worked as expected but the same delay occurs when trying to scan from the control panel of the printer.  Over to you to see if you have any further suggestions, if not I'll learn to live with the delay and adapt accordingly.
