I have setup a shared folder on my synology DS418 NAS
scan to network folder does not work and the job fails.
the path is simple \\DS418\Scans
user id is guest and the password is 5 digits,
SMB1 thru SMB3 is enabled on the NAS
smb really doesn't need a password yet with credentials or without in the setup, it still fails.
I've tried to as admin on the printer to scan, it still fails.
Where can I look to find the actual reason for the failure?

Hi @csmaslin,
Thank you for your response.
It sounds like you encountered a common issue where network path resolution using hostnames does not work as expected, and using the IP address instead can be a straightforward workaround. This issue can occur due to various reasons, like DNS settings or networking configurations that may prevent hostname resolution.
In general, when configuring network paths for scanning or saving documents to shared folders, using an IP address can often provide a more reliable connection than a hostname. This is because IP addresses directly specify the network location of a resource, bypassing potential DNS resolution issues.
If you continue experiencing similar issues, here are some steps you might consider:
Check DNS Configuration: Verify that the DNS settings on your network and devices are correctly configured. This ensures that hostnames can be resolved to IP addresses.
Network Name Settings: Ensure that the server or network device hosting the shared folders is set up correctly in terms of network identity and hostname settings.
Firewall and Security Settings: Sometimes, firewall settings can block DNS requests or hostname communications. Checking these settings might help resolve the hostname resolution issue.
Keep the Firmware Updated: Ensure that your printer and any network-related devices are running the latest firmware. Official HP® Support. Sometimes, updates can fix underlying issues related to network connectivity and hostname resolution.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have an amazing day!

Hi @csmaslin,
Welcome to the HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.
When you face issues with the "Scan to Network Folder" feature on HP printers, especially in connection with a NAS like the Synology DS418, here are some steps and resources to help you pinpoint and resolve the problem:
Verify Network Connection:
- Ensure that your HP printer is properly connected to the same network as your Synology NAS.
- Check that both devices are on the same subnet to avoid communication issues.
Check Folder Permissions:
- Make sure that the shared folder (\\DS418\Scans) has the correct permissions set for the guest user. The user must have read and write permissions to the folder.
Validate Network Folder Path:
- Confirm the network path syntax. Make sure you're using the correct hostname (DS418) and the share name (Scans).
- Ensure there are no typographical errors in the path.
Review SMB Configuration:
- Double-check the SMB version settings on your Synology NAS. Try testing the connection with different SMB versions if possible, as some network environments might have issues with SMB1, 2, or 3.
Printer Configuration:
- Access the HP Embedded Web Server (EWS) for your printer by entering the printer's IP address into a web browser.
- Navigate to the "Scan/Digital Send" tab and ensure that the "Scan to Network Folder" settings are configured correctly.
- Make sure the "Enable Scan to Network Folder" checkbox is selected.
Verify Credentials:
- Even if the SMB does not necessarily require credentials, ensure that the guest account credentials (including the password) are entered correctly in the printer setup.
- If "Use credentials of user to connect after Sign In at the control panel" is selected, ensure that users are properly signing in at the printer before initiating a scan.
Troubleshooting via Printer Control Panel:
- Check the printer's control panel or EWS for error messages or logs related to the scan job failures.
Firewall and Security Settings:
- Check if there are any network security settings or firewalls that may be blocking the printer from accessing the NAS.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have an amazing day!

Thank you to all that replied. After making sure that nothing had changed from switching printers on the network. I had the scan to network folders on a HP8625 OJ and repla ed it with the MFP3301. The network folders had not changed and implementation oof the MFP3301 was extremely difficult and not intuitive. The FIX was to change the Hostname in the network path from. //DSM418/Scans to /<IP address>/Scans. Not sure why the host names didn't resolve, but wasn't an issue I was going to chase down.
Thanks again to all that contributed
