Note: From May 1, 2024, the HP Scan and Capture app will no longer be available (retired) in the Microsoft Store and HP will not release any further app updates. Alternatively, you can download HP Smart from the Microsoft Store. For more information on how to set up your printer using the HP Smart app, go to HP printer setup (HP Smart app).
Common problems HP Solution Center not working : Adobe Flash Player Error and Unable to scan

HP OfficeJet Pro 9019e All-in-One Printer
macOS 12.0 Monterey

Had to replace my OfficeJet Pro 8620, which had scan to a searchable PDF ability that I was able to setup for all PDF scans.

The function is not available in the web page of the printer itself or in HP Smart (which seems totally useless).

None of the solutions on these support pages provide a resolution.

When I look to the pages for a different version of the printer software, there is nothing there for a Mac.

Another solution mentions using HP Easy Scan, settings; HP Easy Scan (which hasn't been updated in over a year??)

is unable to see the scanner and has a yellow triangle with an exclamation mark in it for the settings.

A solution would be much appreciated.

Hi @mikl70,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

I'd like to help!

I understand you are unable to scan from your mac.

I am not sure about the feature you are referring to.

To assist better -

  1. Is there any error message on the printer screen?
  2. Are you able to make copies using the printer?
  3. Are you able to scan using image capture/HP Smart?

Let me know!

Is there any error message on the printer screen?

  • HP Scan sees the printer, but there is a communication error when trying to scan.
  • In HP Scan a yellow triangle with an exclamation mark in it shows up at the settings options.

Are you able to make copies using the printer?

  • I can copy, I can print, and I can SCAN from the printer to my MacBook.
  • But I CAN NOT SCAN TO A SEARCHABLE PDF.

Are you able to scan using image capture/HP Smart?

  • I don't use HP Smart

I see that you'd want to scan as an editable PDF on the HP Officejet Pro 9020 All-in-One Printer As per the printing specifications, yes, it is possible to scan as OCR/Editable PDF. Refer to the User Guide pages 67 to 70 for a detailed explanation of scanning as OCR.

Hope this helps!

1. It is a 9010 series printer. That User Guide is for the 9020 series.

2. The User Guide only references Windows, NOT MACOS.

3. The option for Searchable PDF or OCR is NOT available in the EWS...

save a scan as an editable text file

Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software converts the letters in a scan original to an editable text file. Install the HP printer software package for Windows and Mac to use the feature, if available.

Go to HP Software and Driver Downloads to install the driver and software.

After completing the printer setup, open the scanning software to check if OCR scanning is supported.

Windows: Search Windows for your printer model name and number to open HP Printer Assistant. On the Scan tab, click Scan a Document or Photo to open HP Scan. Look for a Save as Editable Text (OCR) shortcut.

Mac: Open HP Easy Scan from your Applications list. Click the Scanner drop-down menu, and then select your printer. Scan a document, click Send, and then select Folder. Click the Format menu, and then find RTF or TXT.

If these options are not available, your printer did not ship with OCR software. Contact a third-party OCR software vendor such as OmniPage, FineReader, or Readiris to see if your printer is compatible.

HP OfficeJet Pro 9020 All-in-One Printer is a series of HP OfficeJet Pro 9010 All-in-One Printer.

Hope this helps!

NO, this does not help.

What do you mean it is not available on a MAC OS?

I just had it on an older model !

HP Recommended

Yes, OCR was available for older printers it isn't for newer models.

This is incorrect.

HP advertises the printer to have this very feature.  See below: Create editable, searchable documents

It has nothing to do with the software on my Mac, but with what is in the printer.

If it is not available then tell me how to request a return, as the printer is useless for me without this feature.
