HP Envy 640
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

When I scan a document from my Envy 7640 to my email address it shows up as a PDF file attachment in the email.

When I try to download I get an error message as below.  How do I fix this so the file opens as a PDF from the email?

Thanks.

Which email program are you using to view the email message?

Is the email program installed on the computer or are you viewing your email in your web browser?

If browser, which browser?

If you have not done so...

Adobe Reader DC – Needed Whether You Use It or Not

Reinstall / Update your PDF Reader (Adobe Reader DC /Optional  Foxit Reader)

HINT:  Watch out for and UNCHECK unwanted extra software

Adobe Reader DC software should be installed even if you do not open / view / print PDF files directly from the software.

What else?

You can check to see if the file format is actually trashed or if something is going on with the translation when the file is downloaded to the computer.

If the file downloads and is saved on the computer,

try the following:

Open File Explorer

Navigate to the folder in which the file is stored (likely Downloads)

Single right-click on the file

Open Properties

In tab General

Remove the existing name of the file and replace it with something that ends with a .PDF suffix.

Click OK to save the change

For example, name the file "Test.PDF"

If the file now opens as a regular PDF file, then the error is likely something in the email that is not translating and correctly downloading the full content.

If that works... What to do?  Not sure - I have seen something similar in PDF files sent to me from someone using Outlook but she did not (could not / did not understand) how to check the formatting.  We let it go since I could rename the received files and use them as intended.

That in mind, if you are using Outlook with your Scan to Email, try a different email address and mailer.  IF the problem is something going on in Outlook, at least you can get on with life while you try to figure out what Outlook is doing to the file format.

Found one "HP Envy 640" entry...

Dragon-Fur,

Thanks for responding so quickly.

I found the file in Downloads and did the rename as test.pdf.  The file then opens perfectly.

I tried sending to a different yahoo email address and have exactly the same problem.  I can't download the file from the email.

So is it something to do with a Setting on the scanner HP Envy 7640?

It doesn't appear to be a problem with Acrobat Reader or the email?

Thanks,

Thomas

Edits - Add content at bottom of message

Good - at least there is a workaround.

I don't think it is the printer or the printer software.  I cannot prove that, of course.  I have only seen this oddity the one time and the issue seemed to have originated on the sender's side when they attached PDF files to an email.

I do agree something is corrupted or misbehaving.

Which printer software are you using?

For example, are you using HP Smart for Windows?

If yes, you could try

Uninstall the HP Smart application from Settings > Apps > Apps and Features

Restart the computer and log in

Open the Windows Store > search for and download / install a fresh copy of HP Smart

New Content

Can you determine the source of the ePrint email?

For example, when the scan-to-email process opens the mail client, would you copy (CC) yourself?

Open the received email and check the source (from) information.

I am curious about the sender (not suspicious - curious).   Thanks.

Why?  Someone has reported something that MIGHT be similar...

No. The issue started when HP switched to sending the email from eprintcenter@HP8.us. There was not an issue when it was coming from eprintecenter@HP.com. This is happening to multiple people. There are other Community posts with the exact same issue. Have not seen any answers!!! Very frustrating!!!

Message received, Dave.

Personally, I don't respond to anger, though I do very much understand that you are frustrated.

This is an active thread.

If you have not done so,

If you would like to do so - and hopefully receive a response from a different Expert,

Please start a thread of your own on the subject.

Hello Dragon-Fur,

Thanks for the Edit and new attempt to sort out this issue.

The email I receive from the scanner / printer Envy 7640 is from:

eprintcenter@hp8.us

I see another contributor with the same issue noted this change in email address, which seemed to appear after a Windows 10 update, but I am not certain.

I share the frustration in that trying to resolve such issues takes precious work hours - which are unproductive.

Are HP aware of this problem, which they may have caused, and how would they normally go about fixing it at the root cause, and when is that likely to happen?

Thanks,

Thomas
