HP Photosmart C4180 All-in-One
Mac OS X 10.9 Mavericks

Hello,

I'm trying to scan a document to my computer so I can email it out. But in the Scan Menu, I only have the option of Scan and Reprint, and Scan to Memory Card. The problem is, when I scan it, nothing shows on my computer. I used to be able to scan a document and it will show in the Preview on my computer as a PDF, and I would have to option to save it or print it.

Then, I tried scanning to a Memory Card, but when I put it into my computer, it cannot read the Memory Card.

Thank you~

You could be right. Maybe the drivers are not fully installed. We can try to reinstall them again. I did some research and found that there are no full-featured drivers available for the printer. Therefore we can install the Mac built-in drivers.

I also read that the printer prints an alignment page each time you power it on. So let us fix the alignment process first.

  • Please align the printer manually by following the steps from "Step two: Align the All-in-One" from this link: http://hp.care/2icfY7g.
  • Once the alignment page prints, you may have to scan it to successfully complete the alignment process.

This should take care of the alignment. Now, let us uninstall the existing printer drivers and reinstall the full featured drivers by following the below steps:

NOTE: I checked and found that there are no full-featured drivers available for the printer. Therefore we can install the Mac built-in drivers.

Hope this information helps. Let me know. Cheers! 🙂

Happy New Year to you! Thanks for reaching out to us on HP Support Forums. 🙂

I came across your post and understand that you have an HP Photosmart C4180 All-in-One Printer and are unable to scan to your Mac PC. I'd like to assist you with this case.

If your printer has a scan button or icon but it does not function, turn on the Enable Scan to Computer function in HP Utility. HP Scan software or the HP Easy Scan app and a scan driver must be installed on the Mac to use the printer scan icon or button.

  1. On the Mac, open Finder , click Go in the top menu bar, click Applications, double-click the HP folder, then double-click HP Utility.

  2. Click All Settings, click Scan to Computer, then select the box next to Enable Scan to Computer.

Figure : Enable scan to computer in HP Utility

Enable scan to computer in HP Utility
  3. On the printer control panel, navigate to the scan menu or icon, then select your computer name.

  4. Select one of the available scan shortcuts, then touch or select Scan.

A folder opens on the Mac where the scanned file has been saved.

Secondly, please check if your PC is able to read other contents from the memory card. You may check out the memory card specifications supported by your printer from this link: http://hp.care/2hHANfC

Hope this helps. Let me know. Cheers! 🙂

Hello Kazi,

I tried going into HP Utility, but the All Settings tab is faded.  All it has on the screen are icons: Supplies Status, Supply Info, Device Information, Align, Calibrate Color, Clean Printheads and Test.

I have a feeling that I might not have installed the program on the Computer properly when I first made the installation.  Everytime I want to print a document, it always requires the alignment printout first (which is wasting my ink), so I now keep my printer on at all times, that way I won't first need to have the alignment done everytime I power it on to print something.  I've had this printer for so long, I don't even remember where the installation CD Rom is kept.  If I need to reinstall this HP Printer, how would I do it without the CD Rom?  Or is there a way to check if it's fully installed into my computer properly?

Thank you~

It works!!! I tried turning off my printer and then turned it on again, it's not prompting me to do the alignment anymore!  I've re-installed the HP printer the way you've suggested, and it seems to be working.  I tried to scan a document, but it is not showing up as a Preview document on my Computer.  The options I have in the Scan Menu is: Scan and Reprint, Scan to Memory Card.  It now shows the preview on the little screen of my printer, rather than in the Preview of my computer.  I remember I used to scan a document, have it popup in the Preview of my computer, save it as a PDF and send it out in emails.  Now, it's just like scanning the document, and to get an additional copy as a reprint.  Wouldn't that kind of make the Copy option useless?  Even in the Scan and Reprint, you can choose how many copies you want to print.

If this little problem can be solved too, then it would be perfect!

Thank you for all your help, so far.  Everything you've suggested has solved my problems!~
