When I try to scan using HP Smart - it says 'Scanning is currently unavailable'. The wireless status confirms the printer is ready and despite an earlier problem I can print OK. I have tried all the troubleshooting suggestions to no avail.

Welcome to the HP support community.
I understand that you are getting the "Scanning is currently unavailable" error, I am glad to assist you.
Are you able to make a copy?
Check the scanner bar functionality: partially lift the scanner lid, and then press the Copy button or icon. If the scanner light does not illuminate or move across the glass then it should be a scanner issue.
Meanwhile:-
Perform a power reset , Reset the printer to recover from printer errors or failures.
- Turn on the printer, if it is not already on.
- Wait until the printer is idle and silent before you continue.
- With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
- Wait at least 30 seconds.
- Plug back the power cable straight to a wall outlet and printer without any surge protector.
- Turn on the printer.
Update the printer firmware to install the latest updates
Here are the steps to update the firmware:- Click here
