I keep getting an error message when I try to scan. No recent changes. I've tried powering down. It took a long time to power down, so I unplugged. I still got the same error.

Hi @SylMaly53,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

The "Scanner In Use" error typically indicates that the scanner is either busy, not properly communicating with your computer, or there’s a software issue. Here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot and resolve the issue:

**1. Check for Active Scanning Jobs

  • Ensure that no other scanning software or process is running that might be using the scanner. Close any scanning applications or programs that could be interfering.
  • Power down your computer and unplug the printer/scanner. Wait for about 30 seconds, then plug everything back in and power them up.

**2. Check Connections

  • Ensure that all cables connecting the scanner to the computer are securely plugged in. If you're using a USB connection, try using a different port on your computer.

B. Try a Different USB Cable:

  • If possible, use a different USB cable to rule out any issues with the cable itself.

**3. Update Drivers and Softwar

  • Visit the HP website and download the latest drivers for your scanner. Install these drivers to ensure compatibility and functionality.
  • Make sure your scanning software is up-to-date. Sometimes, software updates include bug fixes for issues like the "Scanner In Use" error.

**4. Check Scanner Status

  • If your scanner has a display, check for any error messages or status indicators that might give more information about the issue.
  • Open the scanner's software application and look for any error messages or alerts. Sometimes, the software will provide more details on what might be causing the issue.

**5. Perform a Hard Reset

  • Turn off the scanner, unplug it from the power source, wait for about 30 seconds, and then plug it back in and turn it on.

**6. Reinstall Scanner Software

  • Uninstall the scanner software from your computer. Restart your computer, then download and reinstall the latest version of the scanner software from the HP website.

**7. Check for Software Conflicts

  • Make sure that no other scanning programs are running that might conflict with your current scanning application.
  • Boot your computer into Safe Mode and see if the scanner works. This can help determine if a third-party application is causing the issue.

**8. Check for Firmware Updates

  • Visit the HP website to check if there are any firmware updates available for your scanner and follow their instructions to update.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
