Scanner will not work at all; either by control panel or via scan doctor. When I press the scan button on the control panel, the scanner led strip lights up, moves about 1/2 inch, flashes 8 times and returns to the home position. It appears to be a hardware error but I have no idea what error the flashes refer to. Any help would be appreciated.

If the scanner light does not illuminate or move across the glass, but just blinks, it could be a hardware failure.
Refer to the document HP Printers - Resolving Copy Problems for additional info.
