After I start the scan process I get the pop-up:below.
I reinstalled the full-function dirver, and checked that the firmware is current.
I ran the Print-Scan Doctor 5.1. The test scan worked. But when I did another scan it failed with the same message.
The problem persists....

Welcome to HP Forums,
This is a great place to get support, find answers and tips to your technical queries.
To provide you with an accurate solution, I'll need a few more details:
Can you print from the computer?
Is the copy working fine?
Any hardware or software change made on the printer?
Have you tried any troubleshooting steps on your own?
Let's run HP Print and Scan Doctor
Download and run HP Print and Scan Doctor
Install HP Print and Scan Doctor on the computer connected to your printer.
-
Make sure your printer is turned on and connected to the computer.
-
Download HP Print and Scan Doctor, and then follow the on-screen prompts to install and open the tool.
-
On the Welcome screen, click Start to view a list of available printers.
-
Select your printer in the list, and then click Next.
If your printer is not listed or a connection problem is detected, click My product is not listed or select your connection type, follow the on-screen instructions, and then click Retry.
-
Click either Fix Printing or Fix Scanning.
If you are prompted to install the printer software, follow the on-screen instructions. The software can resolve many printer issues.
-
Review the list of test results, and then resolve any issues found.
-
If you see a checkmark
, the printer passed the test.
-
If you see a wrench
, HP Print and Scan Doctor found an issue and repaired it.
-
If you see an exclamation point
, the test failed and required user action, but the step was skipped.
-
If you see an X
, follow the on-screen instructions to resolve the issue.
-
If the issue persists, Assign Manual IP to the printer
1) Print a Network configuration page from the printer's control panel.
2) Look for IP address from the Network configuration page.
3) Open web browser - Chrome or IE or any other browser that you are using.
4) Type the IP address mentioned on Network configuration page into the browser's address bar or URL bar and press enter button.
5) Go to the Network tab.
6) Click on Networking from the left pane.
7) Then click on Network Address (IP).
😎 Click on Manual IP Address and go to suggest a Manual IP.
9) Scroll down the screen and select Manual DNS server.
10) Enter the Primary and secondary DNS server from the Network Configuration page into the Manual Preferred DNS server field.
11) Click on Apply.
Refer to the video link for step by step instructions - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SCnYyq80V9g
Note: The video is for win 8 but steps are similar for other operating systems as well. You need to enter the IP address in the browser's URL or the address bar to access the printer page.
Keep me posted, how it goes!

Hi Raj1788,
Thank you for responding.
I can print and I can copy. No hardware changes. I reinstalled the full-function driver. I ran the print and scan doctor without success.
Following your post I re-ran the doctor. I got this:
I did what it said. After the reboot the doctor came back. I got this:
I thought I’d give this update before looking at the manual IP thing.

I tried the IP address thing. All was well till this step:
6) Click on Networking from the left pane.
Oops - can't add the screen shot...
There is no “Networking” there!
So I tried “Network Identification” followed by “Network Protocols”. Both gave me:
After clicking “OK” I got:
12-16-2018 10:54 AM
Scanned a page. Fine! Scanned a second page; message:
Scanned a page. Fine! Tried to scan another page, eight times. Same message.
Switched printer on and off. Tried scanning, six times. Same message.
Pulled power lead from printer. Tried six more times. Same message.
My warranty expires in four days. I’m getting seriously worried!!!

It looks like you were interacting with @Raj1788, but he is out for the day & I'll be glad to help you out,
I'm the Jeet_Singh & I'm at your service.
After reviewing your post thoroughly, I would suggest here is to uninstall the printer from the root level and then reinstall it by following the steps below:
- Press “Windows key” + “r” to get the “Run” window.
- Type "services.msc" to get Services – Go to “Print spooler” – Right-click and “Stop” the service.
- Now again open "Run" - Type “spool” and ok - Go to PRINTERS folder - delete everything in that folder.
- Go to services again - Start the print spooler.
- Now check for issue resolution.
- If the issue persists, also try clean installing the printer drivers. Here are the steps:
- First, unplug the USB cable from the printer if present.
- Go to Control panel – Programs and feature – Select all the HP Officejet printer entries and uninstall them.
- Now go to Control panel – Devices and printer – Select all the printer entries and remove the device.
- Press the "windows key" + "r" to get the "Run" window open - Type "printui.exe /s" (There is a space between .exe & /) and press enter.
- Under print server properties, go to drivers - remove any entry there as well.
- Again, go to the Run window, type – “c:/programdata” – Go to Hewlett Packard folder, remove any printer related folders & files.
- Restart your computer.
- Please click here to download and install the software.
- Connect the USB cable if prompted and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation.
Please let me know if this resolves the issue, or if you require further assistance!
Eagerly waiting for your response!

Hello Jeet,
Thank you so much for being with me, especially on a Sunday!
At step 5. I still had the problem so I continued.
I ran into these problems at step 10:
I persisted to the end. After rebooting and reinstalling the driver I tried scanning:
Scan 1 – in use message
Scan 2-12 – OK
Scan 13-30… in use message.

You're basically having the same problem as me, and there are a lot of us. I've been trying to solve this for about a month and I haven't found a permanent solution. And I'm starting to think there isn't one.
These random issues keep poping up for me:
- it works, but then it stops working the next time
- stops/starts working after a random shutdown/reboot
- the scanner is busy when it's clearly not
- the pc/printer clearly see each other but can't communicate
- The P&S Doctor freezes at random stages
Sorry, I'm not trying to hijack your thread, I'm just here to tell you that you're not alone.

Hi KiNgKoNgX ,
Thank for your post. I have to say that I am not happy to be among the many that have problems with this printer.
The only good news is that my wife bought Amazon's two-year extended warranty!
Cheers, Tom
