macOS 12.0 Monterey

Hello,

I have an OfficeJet 5258. My computer has MacOS Sequoia 15.3.1.

Recently my Mac no longer detects the scanner function of the printer. I cannot find the printer in the image capture app nor can the HP Easy Scan app find the printer. However, I can print from my printer using this computer. Thus, the computer does recognize the printer.

I have tried uninstalling the printer and reinstalling it to the computer, I have tried downloading the latest drivers and installing them myself. I have tried restarting the printer and computer as well. I still cannot get the scanner function to work.

Has anyone else ran into this issue? Is there a solution?

@Rebelfalcon,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

Ensure the Scanner is Recognized by macOS

  1. Go to Apple Menu > System Settings > Printers & Scanners.
  2. Click on HP OfficeJet 5258 and check if Scan is listed as an option.
    • If Scan is missing, remove the printer (- button) and re-add it, selecting AirPrint instead of HP drivers.

Check Scanner Driver & Compatibility

  1. Go to HP's official support site and confirm if there is a new driver for macOS Sequoia 15.3.1.
  2. Download and install the latest HP Easy Start or HP Smart app.
  3. Restart your Mac and try scanning again.

Reset the Printing System

  1. Go to Apple Menu > System Settings > Printers & Scanners.
  2. Right-click anywhere in the printer list and select Reset Printing System.
  3. Re-add the printer and select AirPrint instead of HP drivers.
  4. Try scanning using Preview > File > Import from Scanner.

Enable Webscan via HP Embedded Web Server

  1. Find your printer’s IP address:
    • On the printer screen, go to Wireless Settings > Network Summary.
  2. Access the Web Interface:
  3. Look for Webscan under the Scan section and try scanning directly.
    • If it works here, the issue is likely with your Mac’s software.

Try Scanning from HP Smart App

  1. Install HP Smart from the Mac App Store.
  2. Open HP Smart, click Scan, and check if it detects your scanner.
  3. If scanning works here but not in other apps, you may need to reinstall HP Easy Scan.

Check for macOS or HP Firmware Updates

  1. Go to System Settings > Software Update and install any pending updates.
  2. Update the printer firmware using HP Smart > Printer Settings > Printer Updates

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
