Hello,
I have an OfficeJet 5258. My computer has MacOS Sequoia 15.3.1.
Recently my Mac no longer detects the scanner function of the printer. I cannot find the printer in the image capture app nor can the HP Easy Scan app find the printer. However, I can print from my printer using this computer. Thus, the computer does recognize the printer.
I have tried uninstalling the printer and reinstalling it to the computer, I have tried downloading the latest drivers and installing them myself. I have tried restarting the printer and computer as well. I still cannot get the scanner function to work.
Has anyone else ran into this issue? Is there a solution?

Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
Ensure the Scanner is Recognized by macOS
- Go to Apple Menu > System Settings > Printers & Scanners.
- Click on HP OfficeJet 5258 and check if Scan is listed as an option.
- If Scan is missing, remove the printer (- button) and re-add it, selecting AirPrint instead of HP drivers.
Check Scanner Driver & Compatibility
- Go to HP's official support site and confirm if there is a new driver for macOS Sequoia 15.3.1.
- Download and install the latest HP Easy Start or HP Smart app.
- Restart your Mac and try scanning again.
Reset the Printing System
- Go to Apple Menu > System Settings > Printers & Scanners.
- Right-click anywhere in the printer list and select Reset Printing System.
- Re-add the printer and select AirPrint instead of HP drivers.
- Try scanning using Preview > File > Import from Scanner.
Enable Webscan via HP Embedded Web Server
- Find your printer’s IP address:
- On the printer screen, go to Wireless Settings > Network Summary.
- Access the Web Interface:
- Open a browser and enter the IP address (e.g., http://192.168.x.xxx).
- Look for Webscan under the Scan section and try scanning directly.
- If it works here, the issue is likely with your Mac’s software.
Try Scanning from HP Smart App
- Install HP Smart from the Mac App Store.
- Open HP Smart, click Scan, and check if it detects your scanner.
- If scanning works here but not in other apps, you may need to reinstall HP Easy Scan.
Check for macOS or HP Firmware Updates
- Go to System Settings > Software Update and install any pending updates.
- Update the printer firmware using HP Smart > Printer Settings > Printer Updates
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
