Hi @pojmanemate,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

Thanks for reaching out. We're sorry to hear you're having trouble with your HP LaserJet MFP 2604sdw, especially after a paper jam during scanning. If you're seeing the message: "Scanner is in use. Please try again when available"

…it usually means the scanner hardware or software is still locked in a "busy" state due to an incomplete job or internal fault after the jam.

1. Perform a Full Power Reset

You’ve restarted already, but try a deeper reset:

  1. Power off the printer.
  2. Unplug the power cable from the back of the printer and from the wall.
  3. Wait 2–3 minutes.
  4. While unplugged, open the scanner lid and gently check for any remaining debris, tiny bits of paper, or a stuck scanner bar.
  5. Close everything and plug back in.
  6. Power on and try scanning again.

2. Check for Stuck Scan Jobs

On the printer touchscreen:

  • Go to Home > Job Status > Cancel Jobs
  • Cancel any pending or stuck scan jobs
  • Retry scanning

3. Update Printer Firmware

A firmware glitch after a jam can lock the scanner in a bad state. Update it:

  1. Go to the HP drivers page:
🔗 HP LaserJet Tank MFP 2604sdw Printer Software and Driver Downloads | HP® Support
  2. Download and install the latest firmware update
  3. Restart the printer and PC after installation

4. Reset the Printer to Factory Defaults

Caution: This will erase network settings and preferences.

  1. On the printer, go to:
Setup > Service > Restore Defaults
  2. Confirm and allow the printer to reboot
  3. Reconnect it to Wi-Fi (or Ethernet), and re-add it to the HP Smart App

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
