Same issue here. Mac OS Catalina. After the firmware update, HP Utility and HP Easy Scan no longer work. Neither can connect to the printer. I can print from apps, I can scan from HP Smart, but can't scan from the printer menu to a USB drive. Not sure if this is a bug .... which would be a huge bug since it seems to affect all OS or they intended to make HP Easy Scan and HP Utility obsolete. Which, IMO, would be stupid.

I have the same problem. Some days ago my computer just stopped communicating with the scanner of my HP Officejet 6970. I am on MacOS Ventura 13.6.1. Printing function works normally. I have been on to the Apple helpline and HP assistance. Neither have been able to solve the problem. Tried using HP Easy Scan - same result.
