OFFICEJET PRO 7740
Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit)

When scanning sometime my 7740 will not recognize that I have documents in the feeder. It scans the empty flatbed instead.

I have the document feeder selected as the source in the Printer Assistant but it doesn't recognize they are there and scans the flatbed. It usually corrects after I've rebooted my PC and turned the printer off a couple of times.

@tone14938, Welcome to HP Support Community!

Scanning issues can be resolved by running the automated troubleshooting tool for windows.

  1. Download HP Print and Scan Doctor, and then follow the prompts to install and open the tool.
  2. Read and respond to the instructions to select your printer, install any required software, and fix scanning issues.

If the issue persists, I recommend you delete the driver and root level and retry, follow the steps below:

1) In Windows, search for and open Programs and features

2) Select your HP Printer

3) Select Uninstall

4) In Windows, search for and open Devices and printers

5) In the Devices and Printers windows look for your HP printer. If you see it listed right-click on it and choose ‘Delete’ or ‘Remove Device’

6) Open up the run command with the “Windows key + R” key combo.

7) Type printui.exe /s and click Ok. (Note: there is a space in between “printui.exe”

😎 Click on the “Drivers” tab

9) Look for HP Printer driver. If you see it Click on it and click Remove at the bottom

10) Select Ok

11) Select Apply and Ok on the Print Server Properties windows

12) Close Devices and Printers.

Now download and install the full-featured software from here.

Let me know the outcome.

TEJ1602, thank you for the prompt feedback!  I followed all your instructions but the scanner is still not recognizing it has documents in the feeder tray. Maybe i posed my problem/concern incorrectly. I'll be more specific.

Until a couple of weeks ago when I would load the document feed tray I'd get the feedback bell tone acknowledging  there were pending documents to scan or print.  I do not get that feedback bell tone whenever I load the tray now. When I load the tray and select scan from within the HP printer assistant it scans the empty flatbed. I believe my problem is associated with the document feeder tray. I've opened the feeder tray area and see no obstructions or anything wrong.

This seems to have started when I began scanning a lot of photos using the "detect content on page" page size option.

Thanks again for your help!

Step 1: Clean the ADF rollers and the separator pad

Clean the paper feed rollers and separator pad in the ADF.

Gather the following materials:

  • Lint-Free cloth or swab

  • Distilled, filtered, or bottled water (tap water might damage the printer)

  1. Lift the cover of the ADF.

    Figure: Lifting the ADF cover

Example of lifting the ADF cover
  2. Lightly dampen a clean, lint-free cloth with bottled or distilled water, and then squeeze any excess liquid from the cloth.

  3. Press the cloth against the rollers, and then rotate them upward with your fingers. Apply a moderate amount of pressure to remove any dust or dirt buildup.

Image: Clean the rollers and separator pad.
  4. Allow the rollers to dry completely (approximately 10 minutes).

  5. Close the ADF cover tightly at both ends.

Try to scan. If the error persists, continue to the next step.

Step 2: Reset the printer

Sometimes an error persists even though there is no paper feed issue. Reset the printer, and then try to print.

  1. Turn the printer on, if it is not already on.

  2. Wait until the printer is idle and silent before you continue.

  3. With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.

  4. Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.

  5. Wait at least 60 seconds.

  6. Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.

    NOTE:

HP recommends connecting the printer power cord directly to the wall outlet.

  7. Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer.

  8. Turn on the printer, if it does not automatically turn on.

  9. Wait until the printer is idle and silent before you proceed.

Try to scan.

Hope this helps!
