To fix your scanner problem while copying, perform a full power reset: turn off the printer, unplug it from the wall, wait 60 seconds, and plug it back in directly to the wall. Listen for the scanner bar moving. If it fails to move or you still receive the error, you should troubleshoot or service the device.

Fix a scanner failure error for HP printers

Follow these detailed steps to troubleshoot the scanner error:
 

Hardware & Power Check:

 

If you are receiving a "Scanner Failure" or "Scanner Problem" error, it typically indicates a hardware or scanner bar issue.

Full Reset: Turn off the printer and disconnect the power cord. Unplug the cord from the wall source as well. Wait at least 60 seconds.
 

  • Direct Wall Connection: Plug the power cord directly into a wall outlet rather than a surge protector or extension cord. Reconnect to the printer and turn it on. 
     
  • Scanner Bar Test: Remove any documents from the flatbed glass, lift the lid slightly, and press the Copy button. Watch the glass to see if the scanner light illuminates and moves across the length of the glass. If the light does not turn on or move, the hardware likely requires servicing.
