I have a LaserJet Pro MFP M148dw printer/scann er, accessed viia WiFi  from a MacBook running macOS 15.5.  The printer and scanner worked fine until the last MacOS upgrade. Now the printer works, but the Scanner returns an error message ("currently unavailable"). I downloaded and reinstalled the driver and the EasyScan app, but that didn't change anything.

In my case Image Capture, HP Smart, HP Easy Scan showed just a simple error "scanner failed to complete overview scan" without any details.

Neither reinstalling applications nor restarting the computer and printer helped.

It turned out that "Scan from a Computer or mobile device" ability was removed in the printer settings. Nobody really knows why and when it disappeared, or it was disabled every time and only MacOS 15.5 was affected by it...

But anyway, here is the solution:

  1. Go to HP Smart app on MacOS
  2. Open your MFU settings, and click to "Advanced settings", it will open a web page in a browser:
    1. if you connected to the printer by USB cable => http://[::1]:59327/#hId-pgAdminSettings
    2. if you connected to the printer by Wifi => https://192.168.1.99/#hId-pgAdminSettings
  3. Go to "Security", "Administrator Settings"
  4. Check and turn on "Scan from a Computer or mobile device" and "Webscan from EWS".
  5. Click on "Apply" button.

Alexey,

Thank you for that suggestion. When I open the printer in HPSmart, however, there is no Advanced Settings option.

When I access the printer using the WiFi URL that you suggested, with the IP address of my printer, there is no Security menu option. The only Security option is under networking, and it has one scan-related option "WS-Scan", which is enabled. There's nothing else related to the scan function in any of the other menus.

Update on the problem:  I discovered that the scanner works find when accessed via HP Smart on my iPad Pro. But on my Macbook, HP Smart still tells me that there is no scanner on the device. So, the problem is evidently in the MacOS driver. I've tried reinstalling HP Smart and the driver, but to no avail. I'll post the problem on the Apple support forum to see if anyone there has encountered the same problem. Thanks for the advice, nevertheless.

I've had exactly the same issue since upgrading to OS 15.5.  Printer functions fine but scanner says "Failed to open a connection to the device."   Same error message with two networks and two different OfficeJet Pro models.
