Note: From May 1, 2024, the HP Scan and Capture app will no longer be available (retired) in the Microsoft Store and HP will not release any further app updates. Alternatively, you can download HP Smart from the Microsoft Store. For more information on how to set up your printer using the HP Smart app, go to HP printer setup (HP Smart app).

macOS 11.0 Big Sur

HP Color LaserJet MFP M283fdw run by Apple iMac 27" Big Sur all updates completed today Problem:  Scanning multiple-page documents (about 20 to 120 pages each) when scanner program HP Smart fails and the (Long!) document gets deleted in entirety and program shuts down, returning me to my desktop.  Searched all files for sign of the document but it is not found, forcing me to start over, scanning from the first page.  This has happened several times in the past week and I am not eager to scan more documents until I resolve this problem.  One error message did appear, but it too went away before I could record it.  By my own recall, the error message said something like "Gateway Error" and #5.  I'm not sure I remembered the number correctly.  I have spent many hours (days, actually) trying to search the help menus but have not been able to follow the instructions to complete a task.  I am not trained to fix this, and I am the owner of the equipment, so there is no administrator to appeal to.  Please help i

I'd like to help!

 

I understand the HP smart app quits in the middle of a scan job.

 

Try the below suggestions-

 

Uninstall HP Smart  

 

1. If installed from HP.com please delete from /Users/Username/Library/Application Support/HP Smart. Then delete HP Smart from the Applications folder and reinstall from the Mac App Store.

2. If downloaded from the Mac App Store please remove /Users/Username/Library/Containers/HP Smart/containers.plist and then launch HP Smart from the Applications folder and go through the setup again.

 

Note: Uninstalling HP Smart will remove all the printers added to it.

 

Try updating mac/ios and printer firmware

 

To update the printer's firmware, refer - HP Printers - Updating or Upgrading Printer Firmware 
 To update Mac, try these steps - How to update the software on your Mac

 

Install HP Smart from the APP store and add the printer to the application, try and scan
