Scanning 35mm negatives with office jet pro 8730

Hi, 

I cannot get my printer to scan my 35mm negatives. Just wondering if anyone had tips of how to do this as I can’t find it in the manual anywhere. I’m assuming it has the capability to scan negatives due to the separate backlit scanning bed

The printers in generally don't support scanning negatives. You need to have if you want good results device with a back illumination like HP Scanjet G4050, printers don't have that.

You can try some DIY but results can't match the one made with G4050

I guess my next question is what is that strip on the scanner for then?

If by strip you mean that part on the scanner lid that is a top scanner, it's is used for duplex copy/scan in single sheet pass. That model has top and bottom scanner that makes duplex copy/scan faster because both sides of the document are copied/scanned at the same time in one pass.
