Hi @loniB

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

Thank you for sharing that, and I’m truly sorry the document feeder on your HP OfficeJet 5255 keeps searching for more pages after scanning—it’s frustrating when a simple scan turns into an error loop, especially when everything seems loaded correctly. This issue often stems from how the Automatic Document Feeder (ADF) interprets page presence or feed completion.

Let’s walk through a few steps to help stabilize the scanning process:

1. Clean the ADF Sensors and Rollers

  • Open the ADF cover and gently clean the feed rollers and sensors using a lint-free cloth lightly dampened with distilled water.
  • Allow everything to dry completely before closing the cover.
  • Even small dust particles can cause false page detection.

2. Check for Page Overlap or Curl

  • Ensure all pages are flat, aligned, and not curled at the edges.
  • Fan the stack before loading to prevent sticking.
  • Avoid using torn or folded sheets.

3. Limit to One Scan Job at a Time

  • If scanning multiple pages, try scanning fewer sheets per session.
  • This helps isolate whether the error is triggered by page count or feed timing.

4. Update Printer Firmware

5. Use HP Smart App for Controlled Scanning

  • Open the HP Smart app and select Scan > Document Feeder.
  • Monitor the scan progress and cancel manually if the feeder continues searching after the last page.

6. Reset the Printer

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it from the wall.
  • Wait 60 seconds, then plug it back in and power on.
  • This clears temporary memory and resets feed logic.

Let’s get your scanning process back to smooth, reliable operation.
