On a previous all in one, I could scan multiple photos and be able to save them individually. I am not able to do that on the HP Officejet 5212. Does it have this capability?

Yes, it has.
Make sure you have the HP Software installed and access it by clicking the HP Officejet 5200 icon on your desktop or under Start > All Apps > HP.
If it is not installed, follow HP Easy Start to install its HP Basic Software option:
https://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib/software13/printers/HPEasyStart_10_5_4216_12.exe
Once completing the installation open the software and select Scan, then select Scan a Document or Photo.
Select Save as JPEG, make sure the Scan Typ is set as Photo and then set the Scan Size as Auto Detect Size, which will auto-crop multiple photos.
