We hoped to do a lot of scanning of old family photos on our HP Office Jet Pro 7440. However, that printer/scanner appears not to qualify for the HP Smart+ Advanced function that enables the scanner to recognize up to three different images at a time and identify them as distinctive files. Can you identify for us some alternative way of enabling the 7440 scanner to recognize and separate multiple images? Thanks.

Hi @History-Dude-1, Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
Your HP OfficeJet Pro 7740 does not support HP Smart+ Advanced’s multi-photo scanning feature, but there are alternative ways to scan multiple images at once and separate them into individual files on macOS Monterey:
Alternative Methods:
Use HP Easy Scan (if supported)
- Download HP Easy Scan from the Mac App Store.
- Place multiple photos on the scanner glass, ensuring they have some space between them.
- Open HP Easy Scan and select your scanner.
- Click Scan and check if it detects multiple images separately.
- If not, scan them all as one file, then manually crop and save each image.
Use Preview (Built-in macOS App)
- Open Preview and go to File > Import from Scanner.
- Select your HP OfficeJet Pro 7740.
- Set the scan mode to Flatbed (not ADF).
- Scan all images together.
- Manually crop each image using the Selection tool and save them separately.
Manually Split Images After Scanning
- Scan all photos together into one file.
- Open the file in Preview or Photoshop.
- Use the Crop tool to isolate each image and save them as separate files.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
