To The Fossette -
Thanks for your reply. I finally got around to trying it.
No luck, but, so far as I can see, because the new version didn't install properly rather than because it didn't work.
I downloaded the package you linked to - I see that it leads to a page on the Apple website, although Apple don't seem to know about this version (5.0) in their list of supported printers and driver versions. I ran the installer, rebooted, removed my printer and then added it again. I picked 'use' and rather than let it auto-select, I explicitly selected 'Photosmart 330 series'.
However, if I click the options and supplies button in the preferences panel the driver version is still given as 4.0.5.
I've repeated the procedure a couple of times, and the result is the same. Unsurprisingly, nothing has changed - the printer still prints properly, but doesn't show up as a scanner, and HP Easy Scan doesn't see it as an available scanner.
Is there some trick I've missed that will get the printer to use that new 5.0 driver?

Hello The_Fossette
As the originator of this forum some two months ago I was delighted to see your post as I thought that finally someone from HP was helping. I tried exacty what you said but without any improvement. My printer is an HP Photosmart C7280c.
After doing all the steps in your post the device installs as a printer but is not even seen as a scanner. The driver shows as version 5.0.5
Could you please check and see if there is something else to be done for this particular device.
Thanks.

I tried to look at just what was changed by the 5.0 installation, given that it didn't seem to have any effect. OS X printer drivers are well out of my area of expertise, but I did spot the following:
The lpinfo -m command (from Terminal) shows the supported printers, and includes this line:
Library/Printers/PPDs/Contents/Resources/HP Photosmart 3300 series.ppd.gz HP Photosmart 3300 series
so I'm assuming this is where the driver is picked up from. Now the modified date for that file in /Library is 24th April 2015, which seems a bit old for a recent update.
I took a Time Machine backup of the systm before the installation (I usually do), and diving into it, this is what it shows for the Library/Printers directory:
and this is what I see in my current system after the 5.0 installation:
so the installation has modified the files in /Library/Printers/hp, but has not changed the files in Library/Printers/PPDs, which is what I'd expected would be changed. Looking at the files in there in more detail confirms that they didn't change.
Is this behaviour what's expected of the installation, or is it a hint as to what's gone wrong? Bear in mind that at this point I don't really know what I'm doing, and proably know just enough to be dangerous... But I assume someone at HP knows how all this works!
Thanks for the help given so far.

I have a Photosmart 7280.
The installation of MacOS Sierra prevented scanning from working when the printer was accessed across the network.
It still worked when the printer was connected by USB cable.
The recent 10.12.2 update has fixed this problem and everything is back to normal operation.

Bingo!
10.12.2 has fixed my problem with the Photosmart 3300 as well. Normally I'd not have installed an update so soon - I usually wait for any reports of problems to surface - but this sounded worth trying. And having gone to 10.12.2 and deleted and re-added my printer, it now shows up in system preferences as a scanner as well as a printer. And I can scan from there. That's all I need.
I can scan directly from system preferences, which is what I normally do. I also checked that I can scan from ImageCapture. Interestingly, the only thing I tried so far that didn't work was scanning from HP Easy Scan, which says "scanner reported an error" - "HP Photosmart 3300 series is currently unavailable". However, I can live without that. I've not yet tried to scan directly over a USB connection, but I asume that will still work.
I'm still seeing 4.0.5 as the driver version, so I still don't understand what happened during the 5.0 installation.
I hope that turns out to be the case for everyone with this problem. I don't see anything in the release notes for 10.12.2 that seem relevant, but it certainly made a difference on my laptop.
And I think I should appologise for having assumed that this was something HP needed to fix.
Thanks, everyone.

After MONTHS of not being able to scan ANYTHING whatsoever, I thankfully saved this link and thread hoping that one day HP would come up with something to correct this massive error when it came to simple changes to a Mac OS!
I see that "The_Fossette" listed these instructions on 12-11-16 and I am guessing that was after the last time I checked in here (Who knows or cares at this point, right?) Had to do all my personal scanning and under the radar stuff at work which is Employer was known, someone would be speed-balling my nuts!
JUST NOW I went thru Fossette's steps one by one and I nearly swallowed my dip (Negeative I am not a Redneck in the sticks stirring moonshine) Just a 22 Year Career Marine who ended up 100% Service Connected (Disabled) after the last IED rung my bell forever, leaving me more jacked up than a Dodge 3500 Dually! Therefore, trying to handle anything truly tech oriented WITHOUT these great Step By Step lists would result in disaster due to my TBI! (Sorry, this is NOT supposed to be about ME here, but the matter of those of us who love our Macs, and happen to own a HP of any type as well!
I do like everything from the new black little symbol, to the different setup, to the newer features, and that I can once again scan things when I absolutely need to! So dear Mr or Mrs Fossette - Sincere thanks from this Old Jarhead to you and your extremely helpful instructions on HOW to get ourselves back into battle!!
Semper Fidelis All,
Gunny out..........
Ps. Not that Im a huge fan of our new Prez, but there is no doubt in my Military Mind that he is much, much more effective and suitable for office than the alternative lying POS who spoke to our Men & Women in uniform like they were nothing but the dirt they crawled and bled in all over the Globe! And for the record, I even worked on then Major General (Two Star) James Mattis G-3 Staff Operations while Gen Kelly was his Asst CG, and then Colonel Joe Dunford was his Chief of Staff! They got the band back together again my fellow Patriotic Americans! This will no doubt be an interesting 4 years with The Celebrity at the Helm, but ya gotta love a Commander & Chief who goes out of his way to shake the hand of every Servicemember, LEO, FIrefighter, and EMS personnel wherever he goes! OOHRAH !!!

No luck with scanning since Sierra came out - until yesterday when I read about and installed the 5.0 drivers. I have an OfficeJet 7300 and it was a real relief to be able to scan using the Preferences/Printer/Scan option.
Funny but HP Easy Scan (very latest from eraly April 2017) still fails with:
HP Officejet 7300 series is currently unavailable. Ensure your device is powered on, check the connection, and ensure your network is functioning properly. If these conditions are correct, restart the device and try scanning again.
Same error as others see. ImageCapture works too - but it looks suspiciously like the view one gets using Scan from the Printers panel...
Also, thanks again to "The_Fossette" for helping here. Really, anyone reading this forum and having any success should tap the "Like" button for every one of his posts!
