I am a musician.
I like to write chords above lyrics for songs.
This I do with my trusty 2b pencil.
My old Printer had the choice of scanning documents in Colour, Greyscale, or Black and White.
If I used Greyscale, the pencil annotations were grey and the printed words black.
I used Black and White.
This ensured that my pencil annotations were displayed in Black on my tablet clearly and brightly.
I am about to buy a new HP M140W Printer Scanner.
Will I be able to scan documents in true Black And White?
If so... how?
Thanks in anticipation.

Hi @T-Bonemusic, Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
First off, major props for keeping the tradition of handwritten chord annotations alive! There’s something truly magical about the connection between pencil, paper, and melody—like a vintage tube amp, but for songwriting. 🎸🎶
Now, onto your question: The HP LaserJet MFP M140w does indeed have a Black & White scanning option, but there’s a little fine-tuning involved to get that crisp, high-contrast look you love. Here’s how to make sure your 2B symphonies scan in their full, inky glory:
1️⃣ HP Smart App (for PC & Mobile):
- Open the app and select Scan.
- Choose "Black & White" instead of grayscale.
- Adjust contrast if needed to make those pencil marks pop!
2️⃣ Windows Scan Tool / macOS Preview:
- Select "Black & White" mode.
- Play with brightness/contrast if your chords are feeling a little too "lo-fi."
3️⃣ Pro Tip – Use ‘Threshold Adjustment’ (if available):
- This setting forces lighter greys (like pencil) to turn fully black.
- If the option isn’t obvious, scanning in grayscale and tweaking the image later might be the encore you need.
Your chords should come through in deep, bold black, ensuring that your tablet displays them as beautifully as a well-strummed G major. 🎼✨

Hope that helps, maestro! Let me know if you need an encore—or a setlist of extra tips. 😄😜
Keep composing, keep scanning, and most importantly—keep rocking! 🤘
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.

To scan documents in true black and white (not grayscale) using your HP LaserJet MFP M140w printer/scanner, you’ll need to adjust the scan settings either through the HP Smart app or the printer’s Embedded Web Server (EWS), as the M140w doesn’t have a detailed control panel for direct adjustments.
You can also convert a scanned document to black and white using software like SwifDoo PDF or iScanner.
