Just purchased a new HP3301 MFP Color LaserJet printer, every document that I’ve scanned using the document feeder, results in skewed documents. In addition, when I attempt to update the firmware, the printer will not completion connection with HP’s download server.

Hi @DDavid99
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds like you’re experiencing a couple of issues with your HP 3301 MFP Color LaserJet printer, including skewed/crooked scans and a firmware update failure. Let's break down both problems and go through troubleshooting steps to resolve them.
1. Skewed or Crooked Scans with Document Feeder
Skewed scanning can be caused by a few different factors, including misalignment of the document in the feeder, software settings, or hardware issues with the document feeder itself. Let’s go over some steps to help fix this:
Check Document Alignment in the Feeder:
- Ensure the document is loaded straight in the document feeder.
- The paper guides should be adjusted so they’re snug around the edges of the document to avoid any shifting during the scan.
Check for Paper Size Settings:
- In some cases, mismatched paper size settings in the printer settings or scanning software can cause documents to skew.
- Make sure that the paper size setting in the scanning software matches the paper you're scanning (e.g., A4, Letter).
- If you’re using the HP Smart app or HP Scan software, double-check that the settings reflect the correct paper size and orientation.
Clean the Document Feeder:
- Dirt, dust, or debris can sometimes cause the feeder rollers to malfunction, leading to skewed scans. Clean the rollers gently with a soft, lint-free cloth. Be careful not to damage the mechanism.
- Ensure that there’s no paper stuck inside the feeder, which could cause misfeeding and skewing.
Check for Firmware or Driver Issues:
- Outdated or incompatible drivers and firmware can sometimes affect scanning performance. Ensure that your printer’s software is up to date.
2. Firmware Update Not Connecting to HP’s Server
If you're unable to complete the firmware update and your printer is not connecting to HP’s download server, here are some steps to troubleshoot this issue:
Check Network Connection:
- Ensure the printer is connected to the same network as your computer or mobile device.
- If using Wi-Fi, make sure the signal is strong, and the printer has internet access.
- Try printing or scanning to verify that the network connection is stable.
Try Updating Through HP Smart or Printer Control Panel:
- If you’re using the HP Smart app, go to the Firmware Update section within the app and see if it allows you to download the latest firmware.
- Alternatively, you can try updating the firmware directly from the printer’s control panel (if available). Navigate through the printer’s menu to find the Firmware Update option.
I hope this helps.

Thank you for the information, this was good information - though it didn’t resolve either concern. This printer is brand new, out of the box. I reviewed the scanning adjustment recommendations which, however, each subsequent test had the same results of the scans coming out skewed. I’m open to alternative suggestions.
In regards to the firmware, I tried from the printer, HP Smart App and through the web-portal, each attempt resulted in an unsuccessful update respond.

Hi @DDavid99, Thank you for response.
Here are advanced troubleshooting steps for both issues:
Issue 1: Skewed or Crooked Scans Using the Document Feeder
Since the basic steps did not resolve the issue, let’s dig deeper:
1. Check the Document Feeder Rollers and Separation Pad
- Open the Automatic Document Feeder (ADF) cover.
- Locate the rollers and separation pad (small rubber/foam-like part).
- Clean them using a lint-free cloth slightly dampened with water or isopropyl alcohol (90% or higher).
- If the rollers look worn out or have a smooth, shiny appearance, they may need replacement.
2. Test the Flatbed Scanner
- Place a document on the flatbed scanner instead of the feeder.
- If the scan comes out straight from the flatbed but skewed from the feeder, the ADF is the problem.
3. Perform an ADF Calibration (If Available)
Some HP printers allow for ADF calibration:
- On the printer's control panel, go to Settings > Scanner Maintenance > Calibrate Scanner.
- Follow the instructions on the screen.
4. Try a Different Scanning Software
- If you are using HP Smart or Windows Scan, try HP Easy Scan or third-party scanning software like VueScan.
- This helps rule out a software-related skew issue.
5. Scan from a Different PC
- Try scanning using another PC or mobile device to check if the issue persists.

Issue 2: Firmware Update Fails
If the firmware update fails via HP Smart, Web Portal, and Printer Panel, try these steps:
1. Manual Firmware Update via USB
- Download the latest firmware manually from HP’s support website:
HP Official Support - Connect your printer to the PC using a USB cable.
- Run the firmware update file on your PC while the printer is connected.
2. Change DNS Settings
- If your network is blocking HP’s update servers, change the DNS settings in the printer:
- Go to the printer's Embedded Web Server (EWS) (type the printer's IP address into a web browser).
- Navigate to Network > Advanced Settings > Manual DNS.
- Set the DNS to 8.8.8.8 (Google DNS) and 8.8.4.4.
- Save and restart the printer.
3. Check for Security or Firewall Blocks
- If you're using corporate or ISP-managed internet, try updating from a different network (like a mobile hotspot).
- Temporarily disable firewall/antivirus on the PC to check if it interferes.
4. Try HP’s Firmware Update Utility (Windows Only)
- Download the HP Firmware Update Utility from HP’s website.
- Run the tool and select the printer for an offline update.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.

I tried everyone of the recommendations for the firmware update - none were successful.
1. Firmware update using the wdl file downloaded from HP's site on a flash drive, printer responds, unable to find file - tried with multiple USB drives
2. Embedded Web interface, failed; confirmed DNS and confirmed the printer is able to paid with HP's cloud solutions/ HP account
3. I am not using an corporate or ISP-manage internet; antivirus disabled, no luck
4. HP's Firmware Update utility failed
Other recommendations?
