Installer misidentifies my new Dell 660s running 64-bit Windows 7 (factory installed) as a 64-bit XP OS and fails (XP has never been installed on the computer). I have downloaded the latest version of the recommended software directly from the HP support site. Obviously there is an installer problem.
Is there a workaround or another suitable piece of scanner software?

Thank you, Waterboy.
I am a bit surprised but really pleased. I had tried various combinations of connection from nothing at all, to fully connected and powered on, with the same failure.
After your message I did two things. I rebooted the computer and I downloaded a fresh copy of the installation software. It installed properly and I have done some photo scanning, something at which this scanner and its software excel.
Thank you very much for giving me one more shot of encouragement to try again. I had started with the unit connected since I just rolled out my old Vista-based computer and plugged everything into the new Dell. Perhaps the error occurred on the first installation attempt and persisted regardless of the connections until I did the reboot.
At any rate, thanks again. I am a happy scanner again.

I got a similar message to that above, but I have Win 7 64-bit professional. Any idea what will work for me since following the process here still didin't work for me?
Also, I downloaded the basic drivers and couldn't get that to work with MSOffice 2010 clip manager. I tried setting up the button events, but something was wrong there as well. I couldn't add programs to be triggered by the button event.
Do I need to clean some keys out of the registry or something like that?
Thanks.

Hi Bill7231,
Welcome to the HP Forums.
I see that you are having some issues setting up the scanner to work with MSOffice 2010 clip manager as well as installation issues.
When installing the scanner to the computer, we need to look at a few steps. First off, please make sure that you have the printer power cable connected directly to a wall outlet and not a power bar/strip. Here is a document that uses a LaserJet printer as an example but it is meant for HP products in general. Please click on the following link that explains the Issues when Connected to an Uninterruptible Power Supply/Power Strip/Surge Protector.
The next step would then be to follow the instructions from the previous post. Make sure you do NOT have any cables connecting the scanner to the computer and then download the HP Scanjet Full Feature Software and Driver package to your desktop so that it creates its own Icon. Double click the Icon and follow the instructions. Connect the scanner to the printer only when prompted to do so.
Please let me know if this helps or not.
Thanks for your time.
Cheers,

Hello,
I have the same issue that ChanVO
The most recent drivers do not solve my issue.
My computer is an HP 800G2, and the software indicate "Pilote USB" and "Materiel USB" with a red cross. The message is "Ce matériel ne possede pas le support logiciel USB requis pour permettre une installation USB..."
Is anyone a solution.
Thank you in advance.
