I have found that I can connect by USB and get all the scanning features, and integration into the macOS. (image cpature)
But this only works with a direct connect. Even using the USB port on my time apsule, which is hard wired to myimac stop the scanner working.
Looks like some sort of network issue

Agreed! I've been fighting the scan from printer problem since the upgrade to Yosemite and it's not properly working now that I've upgraded to Sierra, either. At least the EasyScan solution still works once you upgrade, but HP's canned troubleshooting steps (a) don't fix the problem, at least for me and (b) don't address what's really wrong.
It's like this: you can open a beer can with a gun if the tab breaks off, but that doesn't mean that we should be happy with a broken tab -- plus, you lose a lot of beer.
Come on, HP, prove the critics wrong and write some decent software to fix these technical issues!

I just purchased an OfficeJet 6978. I had no problem setting up the wireless printing function, but the scanner wouldn't work. After spending hours working with HP Support to no avail, I contacted Apple. Although there is no software fix, the tech suggested I use an ethernet cable between the printer and modem, works perfectly well.

I spoke with HP last night about the inability to enable Scan to Computer. The response I got was the same: there is no available driver, and until there is, use HP Easy Scan.
The only strange wrinkle is that Scan to Computer was working fine under macOS Sierra until a day or two ago. LOTS of pictures successfully scanned for a Shutterfly book for the holidays.
The only response/explanation from the HP rep was, in effect, that it wasn't possible that I could have Scanned to Computer under macOS Sierra. Real helpful.

Don't you love it when tech support tells you what you did could not be done as though you're hallucinating it all? Then again, HP's tech support has long been problematic as has been their software. I highly doubt a new driver will be out any time soon. As long as EasyScan keeps working, I'll deal as I've had to do for months now.
PS I was actually able to get Scan to Computer enabled and functional exactly ONCE, but it broke the next time I tried it. In fact, I just re-edited this messasge hours after I posted these comments to say it worked again. The only thing I did was reboot my Mac again. I'm guessing as been already said that the network link between computer and printer drops and that's all she wrote until rebooting (maybe) restablishes the link.

Yes, Easy Scan works fine, but that's not the point.
Easy Scan requires you to initiate the scan from your computer, which can be across the room from the printer and not very convenient.
What we're talking about here is having Scan to Computer enabled so that you can stand at your printer and initiate scans to your computer from the front panel of the printer.
As the HP tech characterized it, Easy Scan is a "work around" until such time as Apple and HP can agree on the development and deployment of a new driver for macOS Sierra that will enable the Scan to Computer function.
