Microsoft Windows 11

I recently upgraded my computer to Windows 11. I have tried using HP Smart to scan a document. HP Smart says it cannot connect to the printer. Note: I have no issue at all printing documents on my printer from any Microsoft applications (Word, Excel, ...) or Adobe Acrobat for pdf files.

What is the solution to this problem?

Hi @Olaf007,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It seems that HP Smart is having trouble connecting to the printer after your upgrade to Windows 11, even though printing works fine. Here are some steps to help resolve this issue.

Ensure HP Smart is Updated:

  • Open the Microsoft Store, go to "Library," and check if there's an update available for the HP Smart app. If there is, update it to the latest version.

Reinstall the Printer in HP Smart:

  • Open HP Smart, click on the "Settings" icon (gear), then select your printer under "Printers."
  • If your printer is listed but not connecting, try removing it and then adding it back by selecting "Add Printer" again.

Check Printer Status and Connectivity:

  • Ensure the printer is powered on and connected to the same network as your PC.
  • You can also check the printer’s IP address by printing a network configuration page and verifying that the correct Wi-Fi connection is selected.

Run HP Print and Scan Doctor:

  • Download and run the HP Print and Scan Doctor tool from the HP website. This tool can automatically detect and fix issues with both printing and scanning.

Check Windows 11 Permissions:

  • Go to Settings > Privacy & Security > App Permissions, and make sure that HP Smart has permission to access your printer and network.
  • Additionally, ensure the Windows Firewall or any other security software is not blocking the connection.

Check Windows Scan Settings:

  • Press Windows key + I to open Settings, then navigate to Devices > Printers & Scanners.
  • Select your printer, then click "Manage" and ensure that the scanner option is enabled.

Reinstall Printer Drivers:

  • Go to Settings > Devices > Printers & Scanners, select your printer, click Remove Device, then reinstall the printer from Add a Printer or Scanner.
  • Download and install the latest drivers from the HP website, especially if you use a full-feature driver or software suite for scanning.

After performing these steps, restart your computer and try scanning again via HP Smart.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Hi Alden4,

Thank you for your detailed reply. I did not see until now, as your message got filtered in my spam box. 😞

Anyway, I tried again tonight: I open HP Smart, I see the printer, then I click on "Scan", it shows the same error message, not able to connect.

As I was going through your list, all of a sudden, the message went away and HP Smart managed to connect to the printer. Not sure what fixed it. It works now.

Thanks again!
