Thank you for your prompt replies.
Yes, it scans with the top closed.
With the help of Heaven, I figured out how to scan with the top cover open. It took a bit of fiddling around. The top cover seems to have to be standing straight up, at a 90 degree angle. Also, one has to be sure that that the menu on the scanner has been cleared from any "paper jams".

@dj4,
Let's try these steps:
Step 1: Power Reset
- Make sure this printer is plugged into a direct wall, not a surge protector.
- Turn the printer on.
- Wait until the printer is idle and silent before you continue.
- With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
- Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet. Wait at least 60 seconds
- Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.
- Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer.
- Turn on the printer, if it does not automatically turn on.
- Try to scan again.
Step 2: Clear paper from the document feeder
- Clear paper from the document feeder
- Turn off the printer.
- Use both hands to remove any visible jammed paper in the ADF input tray.
- Open the ADF cover.
- Use both hands to remove any jammed paper inside the ADF.
- Close the ADF cover.
-
Turn on the printer.
-
Try to scan again.

How does one scan a page from a thick book?
The scanner reports a paper jam with the top cover open.
Why can't the scanner scan with the top cover open so that one may scan a page from a thick book that will not fit under the top cover of scanner when it it is closed on top of it?

@dj4,
It should scan with the top cover open.
Are you able to scan a single document from the printer with the lid closed?
Also, try to check for paper jams in the other parts of the printer.
- Clear Jammed papers near Input Tray, Toner cartridge area and Output bin.
- Refer to this document for further information on clearing a jammed paper.
- If the issue persists, update the printer firmware
- Refer to this link to update the printer firmware.
- Try to scan again and check
Let me know what happens.
