HP LaserJet Pro MFP M227fdw
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Sometimes, but not always, our fax machine will reboot when trying to send or receive faxes. Upon rebooting, it will try again and reboot again until you manually cancel the fax.

So far I have tried:

  • replacing the phone cord,
  • making sure the HP all-in-one was plugged directly into mains power,
  • going through the fax set up and checking all settings,
  • sending a fax to an outside number (failed),
  • sending a fax to the Local Office (failed),
  • and receiving a fax from the Local Office (failed).

All of the diagnostics on the HP all-in-one fax check out, including a dial tone.

Over a few days I tried sending and receiving to additional phone numbers. Sometimes the faxes would reboot, sometimes they would succeed, with variations happening not only between numbers but between attempts on the same number: again sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. It mostly doesn't work (reboots) unfortunately.

Hi @FaxTrouble123,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I understand you have trouble using the printer with the fax. If your HP LaserJet Pro MFP M227fdw restarts when sending faxes, try troubleshooting by checking the fax activity log for errors.

1. Check the Fax Activity Log:

  • From the printer control panel, navigate to Menu > Tools > Reports > Fax Reports > Fax Activity Log.
  • Print the log to identify any error messages or issues that might be causing the reboots.

2. Ensure a Clear and Correct Phone Line Connection:

  • Disconnect other lines: If a phone is connected to the printer, make sure it's hung up and disconnect any other lines between the fax and the printer.
  • Direct connection: Connect the phone cord directly between the printer and the telephone jack in the wall.
  • Check for dial tone: Plug a phone into the same wall jack and ensure you hear a dial tone.

3. Adjust Fax Settings:

  • Set fax speed to slow: In the fax settings, change the speed to "Slow".
  • Set fax resolution to standard: Set the resolution to "Standard".
  • Turn on Error Correction Mode: Ensure Error Correction Mode is enabled.
  • Check Fax Ring: Ensure the fax ring is set to a reasonable setting, such as 20 or 55.

If still facing the issue, please try the steps shared in this HP Link.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
