Hi @DIY17wood,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

To set up "Scan to Computer" on your HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M283fdw and scan directly to your Mac with macOS Sequoia 15.2, follow these steps.

Install the HP Smart Software on Your Mac

  1. Download and install HP Smart from the Mac App Store.
  2. Launch HP Smart after installation.

Set Up "Scan to Computer" in HP Smart

  1. Open HP Smart.
  2. On the main screen, click on your HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M283fdw printer.
  3. From the printer’s screen, look for an option like Manage or Printer Settings.
  4. Locate the Scan option and enable Scan to Computer (this might be listed as "Enable Scan to PC").
    • This will allow the printer to scan documents directly to your computer via the HP Smart app.

Set Up Network Scanning on the Printer

  1. On the printer, go to the Home screen and tap on Scan.
  2. Tap on Scan to Network or Scan to Computer if the option is available.
  3. The printer should automatically detect your Mac (if both devices are on the same Wi-Fi network).
  4. If prompted, you might need to install additional software for your printer to be fully compatible with macOS (HP Scan Software).

Scan from the Printer to Your Mac

  1. Once the setup is complete, load a document into the scanner.
  2. On your printer’s display, select Scan to Computer and choose your Mac as the destination.
  3. Hit Scan to begin scanning directly to your Mac.

If you encounter issues or don't see the options listed above, please ensure your printer firmware is up to date. You can update the firmware via the printer's control panel or through the HP Smart app.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Thank you for reply with instructions. It does not work. When I select Scan to Network and the screen appears: "This feature is not set up. Note: set up must be done on a computer that is connected to the same network as the printer. My imac and printers are using ethernet.

I remembered I called support last year or two. They guided me to set up on computer using http:// numbers that are printers. Then fill up in the box. I don't remember what to put there.

Here is screenshot. Hope that you can help with that.

Hi @DIY17wood,

Thank you for your response,

The troubleshooting steps provided didn't resolve the problem, I recommend trying the following advanced steps to set up scanning.

Access the Printer's Embedded Web Server (EWS)

  1. Find the Printer's IP Address:
    • On the printer's control panel, press the "Home" button and navigate to "Network" or "Settings". The printer’s IP address should be displayed there.
  2. Enter the Printer's IP Address in a Web Browser:
    • Open a web browser on your Mac.
    • Enter the IP address of the printer (e.g., http://192.168.x.x) in the address bar.
    • This will open the Printer’s Embedded Web Server (EWS) where you can adjust settings.

Configure "Scan to Network" on the EWS

Log in to the EWS:

  • If required, log in using the administrator credentials (default credentials are usually found on the printer's manual or label).

Navigate to the Scan Settings:

  • Go to the "Scan" tab or "Scan to Network" settings, depending on your model.

Set up Network Folders:

  • Look for options to configure "Scan to Network".
  • Add the network folder or shared location where the scans will be saved. Ensure that this folder is shared on your Mac or another computer in the same network.

Enable Scan to Computer:

  • Ensure that the "Scan to Computer" option is enabled under "Scan Settings". This will allow your Mac to act as a destination for scanned documents.

Save the Settings and exit the EWS.

Configure Scan Settings on Your Mac

Install HP Scan Software:

  • Download and install the HP Scan Software from the Mac App Store if you haven't already. This will allow your Mac to communicate with the printer for scanning.

Check Firewall/Antivirus:

  • Sometimes, macOS firewall or antivirus software can block the scanning feature. Ensure that these are not blocking communication between the printer and the Mac.

Restart Your Mac and Printer:

  • Restart both your Mac and printer to apply any new settings or configurations.

Test the Scan to Computer Feature

On the Printer:

  • Load a document into the scanner and select the Scan to Computer option from the printer's display.
  • Your Mac should appear as a destination if it’s properly configured on the same network.

On Your Mac:

  • Open Preview or HP Scan software, and check if you can scan directly from the printer.

Update Firmware

Ensure that the printer's firmware is up to date:

  1. On the EWS, go to "Product Update" or "Firmware" and check for available updates.
  2. Install any updates and restart the printer.

These steps should help resolve the issue with "Scan to Network" and "Scan to Computer" features.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

I already had HP Smart. I have been using this app to scan. But I have lot of papers that I need to scan so I don't want to walk back and forth from printer to my computer. That's why I need to have scan to network working which I had it before.

You mentioned "From the printer’s screen, look for an option like Manage or Printer Settings." I don't see any like this in HP Smart settings.

Geez... I could not get http:// printer IP. I did that other day, not today.
I feel like I had to **bleep** instead of this commmunication.
