I don't recognize "Scan Direct" - it is likely just a translation oddity.
Ignore that - it's my problem and not your problem.
Assuming the Full Feature Software is installed on the computer,
If the PRINTER is not setting the paper size as you want / need,
Consider / Try
Use the Embedded Web Server (EWS) to adjust the Tray and Paper Management settings.
EWS – Browser – Tray and Paper Management
Open your favorite browser > type / enter Printer IP address into URL / Address bar
Tab Settings > Preferences > Tray and Paper Management
If applicable, check the Advanced section (at the bottom of the Tray and Paper Management menu)
Click Apply to save changes
Example - Retain / Modify Paper Size / Type Settings
Retain_Printing_Preferences_5
Again, assuming the Full Feature Software / Full Driver printer software is installed,
If HP Scan is not setting the Shortcut / paper as needed,
Open HP Scan > Select a Shortcut that matches your needs OR select a Shortcut and edit the settings.
Save the (edited) Shortcut as a "Custom Shortcut" or simply leave an "already OK" Shortcut as the Preferred setting.
Example - HP Scan - Main Menu
9025_HP_Scan_Menu_PDF_4
If HP Smart Windows is not setting the A4 paper as the default,
Try checking / adjusting the Country setting in HP Smart.

Will that work?
Unlikely - but only takes a minute to check...

What else?
If the HP Smart application refuses to accept your A4 default for scan Presets,
Open HP Smart Windows > Click the Settings wheel
Send Feedback to the HP Smart team - Explain the issue, what you see, and what you want.
Sending Feedback does not change anything in the immediate sense - sending information helps the team understand your experience.

The full driver provides the foundation on which other programs and printing software depend.
Printer Software - Preparation
If you have not done so,
In addition to the HP Smart application,
Install the Full Feature Software / full driver printer software for the printer.
HP Smart and other print software / applications benefit from having the full driver installed.
Printer Software Check
Notes
If the full driver printer software is installed, you will see the printer listed in Control Panel > icon view > Programs and Features.
The installation of the printer software adds two shortcut icons to the Desktop.
The Printer Assistant is named for the printer and provides access to Print , Scan , and Tools
HP Scan is named for itself and provides a direct call to the HP Scan software.

Printer software not installed?
Method - Use the Easy Start Wrapper to Install the Full Feature / Full Driver Software
For printers that support the option,
Use the Easy Start wrapper to install and configure the printer software.
- Home Page - HP Easy Start
- Open Category Software and Drivers
- Topic: Software-Utility
- Download-and-Save the current version of the Easy Start wrapper to install your print software
- If using USB: Disconnect the USB cable between the printer and computer before installing the software.
- Right-Click on the downloaded package and "Run as Administrator" to start the installation
- When asked, Select to install the “Full Driver” / “Full Feature Software”
- If using USB: Connect the cable when instructed to do so (near the end of the installation process).
- After the software is installed, Restart the computer and log in.
Notes >> Easy Start... The Journey
- Full Administrator Rights are required to complete the HP Software installation.
- About 2/3 of the way through the setup, you will be given the opportunity to select the software - select the "Full Driver" set (as opposed to the basic driver or other application).
- You can skip / ignore suggestion(s) that you add the HP Account – you’ll need the account at some point, for now, you can skip this suggestion (as many times as it insists it’s a good idea) during the full driver software installation.
- If you see it, you can skip / ignore suggestion(s) regarding Instant Ink subscription. Instant Ink subscription is NOT mandatory.
- Disconnect from Virtual Private Network (VPN) connection while installing printer software.
- Full driver includes print and scan functions supported by your printer and provides the printer features on which other applications / software might depend.

OK - got it.
Scan directly from the printer.
Different model - my settings might not reflect what you see.
The only thing I can offer is how it works on the 9025...
OfficeJet Pro 9025 - Printer Display - Change Paper size / type
Tap the display (wake up)
Settings Wheel
Slide row of icons to view choices >>> Select Paper Tray icon (two tiny stacked tray icons)
Select / Tap on a Tray (or, if only one Tray, open that entry)
When the information opens, tap on the > "right arrow"
Change the paper setting
Will that make a difference for you?
Doubtful.
This is just another way to change the paper size / type (using display).
If that were the fix for changing the Page Size of the Scan field, you'd like have caught it.
I never use Scan from the printer display - too limited.
That said, if I do find anything actually helpful, I'll post back.

Thank you for the answer. Unfortunately, I do not have this selection on the panel.
The scan is always in "Letter" format even if I select "A4" format in the panel. It always changes back to the "Letter" format.
