Note: From May 1, 2024, the HP Scan and Capture app will no longer be available (retired) in the Microsoft Store and HP will not release any further app updates. Alternatively, you can download HP Smart from the Microsoft Store. For more information on how to set up your printer using the HP Smart app, go to HP printer setup (HP Smart app).

HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M281cdw

I don't use the WebApps very often, but when I do need them I NEED them.  Trying to use Scan to Google Drive on my HP Lasterjet All in one printer and I go to google.com/device and enter the code from my Printer and then sign into google and choose my account. It's blocked by Google.  My firmware and browsers are at the current version.  Any ideas on how to fix?

Hi @presidentsdad

Welcome to the HP support community.

I understand you're experiencing an issue with your HP device, and I apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused. I'm here to help you today.

Please try theses steps:

Verify Email Settings: Double-check the email configuration on your device. Ensure that the SMTP server settings for Gmail are correctly entered:

  • SMTP server: smtp.gmail.com
  • Port: 465 (SSL) or 587 (TLS)
  • Use your full Gmail address and password.

Enable Less Secure Apps: If you’re using an app that Google considers less secure, you may need to enable access:

  • Go to your Google Account settings.
  • Navigate to "Security."
  • Find the "Less secure app access" section and turn it on.

Allow Two-Step Verification

  1. Open your Google Account.
  2. In the navigation panel, select Security.
  3. Under “How you sign in to Google,” select 2-Step Verification and then Get started.
  4. Follow the on-screen steps.

I hope this helps! Keep me posted.

Please click “Accepted Solution” if you feel my post solved your issue, it will help others find the solution.

This has to do with the WebApps on the HP printer.  Specifically the scan to Google Drive.  Once a year or so, it used to let you add your device through the google website with a code from the device in question (My HP printer).  Now when I go to do that from the printer, I still get the code, but when I go to www.google.com/device and enter the code, pick my google account, it says that app has been blocked.  Looks like google implemented a change on Sept 30, 2024 to block these types of apps.  Seems that HP may need to code and release a firmware update to correct this.

Less secure apps & your Google Account
Starting on September 30, 2024, less secure apps, third-party apps, or devices that have you sign in with only your username and password will no longer be supported for Google Workspace accounts. For exact dates, visit Google Workspace Updates. To continue to use a specific app with your Google Account, you’ll need to use a more secure type of access that doesn’t share password data. Learn how to use Sign in with Google.

If an app or site doesn’t meet our security standards, Google might block anyone who’s trying to sign in to your account from it. Less secure apps can make it easier for hackers to get in to your account, so blocking sign-ins from these apps helps keep your account safe

Hi @presidentsdad

Welcome to the HP support community.

I understand you're experiencing an issue with scanning, and I apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused. I'm here to help you today.

Please check this document, Click HERE

The option of "Less-secure access" for POP3/IMAP/SMTP has been discontinued:

Please follow alternate steps :

Turn on 2-Step Verification

With 2-Step Verification, also called two-factor authentication, you can add an extra layer of security to your account in case your password is stolen. After you set up 2-Step Verification, you can sign in to your account with:

  • Your password
  • Your phone

Allow 2-Step Verification

  1. Open your Google Account.
  2. In the navigation panel, select Security.
  3. Under “How you sign in to Google,” select 2-Step Verification and then Get started.
  4. Follow the on-screen steps.

Tip: If you use an account through your work, school, or other group, these steps might not work.

Turn on 2-step verification

Verify it’s you with a second step

After you turn on 2-Step Verification, you must complete a second step to verify it’s you when you sign in. To help protect your account, Google will ask that you complete a specific second step.

Use Google prompts

We recommend you sign in with Google prompts. It's easier to tap a prompt than enter a verification code. Prompts can also help protect against SIM swap and other phone number-based hacks.

Google prompts are push notifications you’ll receive on:

  • Android phones that are signed in to your Google Account.
  • iPhones with the Smart Lock app , the Gmail app , the Google Photos app Photos, the YouTube app YouTube, or Google app signed in to your Google Account.

Based on the device and location info in the notification, you can:

  • Allow the sign-in if you requested it by tapping Yes.
  • Block the sign-in if you didn’t request it by tapping No.

For added security, Google may ask you for your PIN or other confirmation.

Skip a second step on trusted devices

If you don't want to provide a second verification step each time you sign in on your computer or phone, check the box next to "Don't ask again on this computer" or "Don't ask again on this device."

Important: Only check this box on devices you regularly use and don't share with anyone else.

I hope this helps! Keep me posted.

I have 2-step verification turned on and have for several years.  I also followed the " HP Printers - Setting Up and Using the Google Drive App on Your HP Printer" instructions and that is where I get the google has blocked this app (posted in the original post).  It doesn't really seem like you have read my actual post, but picked out a couple of words and published some pre-packaged responses.

Any chance you'd like to share the answer with the rest of us?

Hey all, been out of town (and will be out of town for a bit longer), haven't had a chance to hookup with the HP folks yet.  When I do I'll post the solution (or not a solution depending upon) here.
