Hi @FFC18 ,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand the "cartridges are not intended for use in this printer" error typically occurs when the printer detects that the installed cartridges are either incompatible or not recognized as genuine HP cartridges. Here are some steps to resolve this issue on your HP Smart Tank Plus 658:

1. Verify Cartridge Compatibility

  • Ensure that the cartridges are genuine HP ink bottles intended for your model.
  • The HP Smart Tank Plus 658 uses specific ink bottles (check your manual or printer for the exact model number, such as GT53 for black and GT52 for color).

2. Reinstall Cartridges

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it.
  • Open the ink tank compartment.
  • Carefully remove and reinstall the ink bottles, ensuring they are seated correctly.
  • Make sure there is no residue or obstruction on the tank's caps or valves.

3. Clean Cartridge Contacts

  • Gently clean the nozzle area and any electrical contacts on the cartridges with a lint-free cloth slightly dampened with distilled water.
  • Allow the contacts to dry completely before reinstalling.

4. Update Firmware Update the firmware on an HP printer

  • Outdated firmware may cause compatibility issues.
  • Download the latest firmware from the HP Support website.
  • Install the firmware update on your printer using the HP Smart app or your computer.

5. Reset the Printer

  • Unplug the printer while it’s turned on.
  • Wait for 60 seconds and then plug it back in.
  • Turn the printer on and check if the issue persists.

6. Use HP Smart App for Diagnostics Use Diagnose & Fix in HP Smart to repair common printing ...

  • Open the HP Smart app on your connected device.
  • Run the "Printer Diagnostics" tool to identify and troubleshoot potential issues.

7. Check for Regional Restrictions

  • If you purchased the cartridges in a different region from where the printer was originally set up, regional restrictions may be causing the error.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
