When I use the document feeder to make copies, the words are stretched out mostly on the top half.  I just purchased this printer a few weeks ago and the problem existed from the beginning.

If the pages are flowing through properly when fed then likely you have a defect and should contact place of purchase and exchange it. If the paper does not flow freely, then something may be blocking the ADF path, bits of shipping material getting stuck are more common that people realize. Check the feed path closely. Also test scanning from the glass as well, but if it has happened from day 1, you should not suffer through great amounts of time dealing with it.
