Hello, my 8620 has been working fine in a Win11 Pro installation until a few weeks ago when it "suddenly" started generating the Windows error "HP Scan. "The HP Officejet Pro 8620 was not found" when scanning from the ADF. It still copies and prints and shows as connected wirelessly. I have tried a quick printer driver un/reinstall after reboot. Same problem. I then did a root uninstall, ensuring all references to any HP printer were deleted from Printers, then removing the HP folder from the programdata folder. Rebooted, reinstalled with current driver, but again same error. I see this issue reported by others and some had it resolved by a root install. Another poster here indicated an HP technician resolved it after a long struggle but no indication how. All other device functions including printing from the Win11 system work fine. Please advise,
Thank you!

Welcome to HP Support Community,
Thank you for posting your query; I’m here to help by guiding you through steps to resolve this issue
Verify Network and Connectivity
- Ensure your printer is connected to the correct network: Even though printing works, the scanning process might require different communication protocols.
- On the printer's control panel, navigate to Settings > Network > Wireless and ensure that it’s connected to the same Wi-Fi network as your computer.
- If you're using a wired connection (USB), ensure that the cable is connected securely, and try a different port if possible.
Run the HP Print and Scan Doctor
HP provides a diagnostic tool called HP Print and Scan Doctor that can help identify and fix scanning issues:
- Download and install the HP Print and Scan Doctor from HP's official website.
- Open the tool, and select Fix Scanning.
- Follow the on-screen instructions, which will attempt to diagnose and resolve scanning issues automatically.
Update the Printer Firmware
Sometimes the issue might be caused by outdated printer firmware. Ensure your HP printer has the latest firmware installed:
- On the printer’s control panel, go to Settings > Printer Maintenance > Update the Printer (or check in the HP Smart app).
- Alternatively, go to the HP support website, search for your printer model, and check for the latest firmware version. If an update is available, follow the instructions to install it.

Reinstall or Reset the HP Scan Software
Since you’ve already uninstalled and reinstalled the printer drivers, there might still be issues with the scanning software. Try these additional steps:
- Uninstall HP software completely:
- Go to Control Panel > Programs and Features, find HP Officejet Pro 8620, and uninstall it.
- Delete any HP-related folders in the C:\Program Files (x86)\HP and C:\ProgramData\HP directories.
- Also, check your Device Manager and ensure there are no leftover HP printer drivers under Imaging Devices.
- Reboot your PC.
- Install the latest HP drivers and software:
- Visit HP’s support page and download the latest full-feature driver for Windows 11 for your Officejet Pro 8620.
- Install the software by following the on-screen instructions.
Check Windows Scanning Settings
Ensure that the Windows scanning features are configured correctly:
- Open Windows Settings by pressing Windows + I.
- Go to Devices > Printers & Scanners.
- Ensure the HP Officejet Pro 8620 is set as the default printer and check if there are any scanning options listed.
- If available, click Manage and then Scan a Document to see if it detects the scanner.
Check for Windows Updates
Ensure that your Windows 11 is up to date, as some updates might contain fixes for printer or scanner compatibility:
- Go to Settings > Windows Update and check for any pending updates.
- Install any available updates and restart your computer.
Modify Scanner Settings
Sometimes scanning from the ADF can be disabled or not properly recognized by the software. Try the following:
- Open the HP Scan application (if installed).
- Check the settings to ensure that scanning via ADF is enabled.
- Test the scanning function from the software interface instead of trying to scan directly from the printer.

Use HP Smart App (Alternative Method)
If you're still encountering issues with the default Windows scanning app, try using the HP Smart app:
- Download and install the HP Smart app from the Microsoft Store (if you don't have it already).
- Open the HP Smart app and add your printer.
- Try scanning directly from the app to see if the ADF works correctly.
Disable Antivirus/Firewall Temporarily
In some cases, security software might block communication between your PC and the printer. Temporarily disable your antivirus or firewall and test scanning again. If the issue resolves, you may need to add an exception for your printer software in your antivirus or firewall settings.
Reset the Printer (if needed)
If all else fails, you may want to try a factory reset on the printer:
- On the printer, go to Settings > Printer Maintenance > Restore Defaults.
- This will reset the printer to its factory settings, and you’ll need to reconnect it to your Wi-Fi and reinstall the drivers.
I hope these steps help resolve the issue
