I do not know how to activate the twain driver for my scanner in 64-bit mode? Works fine in 32-bit and also woth WIA drivers. But for a new app I need 64-bit support of the twain driver. This app does not work with 32-bit driver.

Hi @hartmut12,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

I understand you want to use the TWAIN 2.1 64-bit driver for your HP OfficeJet 7740 Pro scanner, as your new application requires 64-bit TWAIN support. Let’s go through steps to activate it.

    a. Check Installed Drivers
        • Open Control Panel > Devices and Printers.
        • Right-click your HP OfficeJet 7740, select Properties > Hardware, and check if the TWAIN 64-bit driver is listed.
        • If only WIA or 32-bit TWAIN appears, you need to download/install the 64-bit TWAIN driver.

    b. Download the Full Feature Software
        • Go to the official HP support page for HP OfficeJet 7740.
        • Select your Windows 10/11 64-bit OS.
        • Download Full Feature Software and Drivers (not just the basic driver).
        • During installation, select Custom Install and ensure TWAIN 64-bit driver is included.

    c. Activate TWAIN 64-bit in Scanner Software
        • Open the scanning application you want to use.
        • Choose Select Source / Scanner, and look for TWAIN 64-bit: HP OfficeJet 7740.
        • If the scanner does not appear, close the app and reopen after a system reboot.

    d. Configure Scanner Defaults
        • Open HP Scan / HP SmartSettings / Scan Preferences → make sure the default driver is set to TWAIN 64-bit.
        • Test scanning to verify the application recognizes the 64-bit driver.

    e. Check Windows Bitness and App Compatibility
        • Confirm your application is 64-bit. TWAIN 64-bit drivers will only work with 64-bit apps.
        • If using a 32-bit app, only 32-bit TWAIN will work — your app must match the driver architecture.

    f. Restart and Test
        • After installation, restart Windows.
        • Open your 64-bit application and select the TWAIN 64-bit scanner.
        • Perform a test scan to confirm it works.

I hope this helps.

Hi,

unfortunately the installation doesn't work. It stops already at the beginning with error code 2753.

Perhaps you know, which kind of error this is.

Hi @hartmut12,

Thanks for the update! I appreciate you trying that out and sharing the error code, great work so far. 🙌

The Error Code 2753 usually appears when a previous installation of the HP software left behind registry entries or temporary files that conflict with the new setup. Let’s go through a few steps to resolve it and get that 64-bit TWAIN driver properly installed.

a. Clean Previous HP Software

Open Control Panel → Programs and Features.

Uninstall anything related to HP OfficeJet 7740 (including HP Smart, HP Scan, etc.).

Restart your PC.

b. Run the HP Print and Scan Doctor

Download from: HP Print and Scan Doctor.

Run the tool and let it remove any corrupted driver remnants or stuck registry entries.

c. Use HP’s “Scrubber Tool” During Reinstall

Download the Full Feature Software and Drivers again from the HP 7740 Support Page.

Run the installer → when the first window appears, do not click “Install” immediately.

Instead, go to your Temp folder:

Press Windows + R, type %temp%, and hit Enter.

Locate the newest HP folder (e.g., 7zxxxxx).

Inside it, open Util > CCC > Uninstall_L3.bat and run it as Administrator.

Once it completes, restart the PC.

Now re-run the driver setup as Administrator and continue with installation.

I hope this helps.

Hi Kenshi,

thanks a lot for your tremendous support. But unfortunately it doesn't work.  I followed step a and b. IN HP Print and scan doctor no product showed up (pretty much clear, as no HP printer/scanner is installed in the moment). Then I followed step c. After accepting the license agreement and some other legal questions I'm asked to accept automatic updates or messages for updates. When I accept this this, the installation starts immediately. Nevertheless I stopped at that point and searched for "uninstall_L3.bat. There's no file with this name in temp directory. IN utils > x86 is a file  named "RemovePreinstalledDrivers.exe". This file I executed and restarted my computer. The result was the same as earlier with error code 2753.
